We're continuing our topics on acros today and much like coral in general, as the saying goes, you learn as you go or you learn how to keep certain corals better with time and experience. It's not always the same way as others. Acropora is a whole beast of it's own though! Let's chat!

Do you consider yourself a successful acropora keeper? Why do you?

At one time years ago , different setup I was successful with my 90 gal filled with mostly sps but also had some lps and anemones

weird thing is I haven’t tried in a long time but something is different with the current setup .

I had beginners luck with sps that lasted for a couple of years. Now that I've amassed more knowledge, I look at them wrong and they do poorly. I keep trying though.

Much like @Oregon Grown Reef I have had some success in the beginning. I am regrouping now making another effort.

There are some arco that grow well and there are acro's the are much more difficult to grow.

I picked up a few frags about a year ago. Most of them are growing ok although very slowly. A couple didn't make it. I don't do anything different that I wasn't doing before in a mixed reef. So many other options available so I'll probably skip sticks going forward. I enjoy my tanks and want to keep it that way. I try to to live a pretty stress free life..lol

I struggled with SPS and Acros at the beginning of my reefing journey. Learned a lot over the years. I have been finding success with the Reef Moonshiners method. 6 months growth on this WD.

Yes, I keep them alive. Some colored up, some not so much.

I think that I'm doing well with the 4' x 10' of Acros at the store, but then my boss @kevinl brings in more and I realize how much better they look coming from his tanks.

Right now things are moving in the right direction. Learning everyday and trying to keep things as stable as possible. One day at a time. Can’t say what happens tomw. Lol.

My two tanks are Acropora dominant. One stylo and a few zoas, otherwise Acros. Both are bare bottom and ULNS, but not intentionally. Trying to bring NO3 an PO4 levels up from zero. Acro colors are lacking due to this IMO. However, I have only lost a few frags over two years; some just don't do well from the start.

nope! nutrients hover around 10-20 no3, and 0.05-0.10 po4. i don't aim for specific numbers/ratio, but just look for it to be in that range.

Same my no3 is like 20 and my po4 .08-.1. Time for a water change. Lol

I started off with a mixed softie and lps reef. I was given a frag of red planet acro in a trade which over a year went from a small frag to a pretty large colony. In the last 6 months I've added a bunch of different frags of acros ( 10ish frags) some have which already turned into small colonies while others have been slower to grow but have been doing well. This is all while running about 25 to 30ppm nitrates and up to .1 phosphates. I just keep my alk and calcium stable at 9.5 and 450. Honestly I didn't do anything special I think it's just tank maturity and stability.

I voted no but every time I decide to try them again the run usually lasts a bit longer than the last. So I think I’m very slowly building my way to success at least lol.

I find the first couple days to two weeks are a bit of a gamble and hard to get passed, but once I get passed that without rtn or stn it feels quite a bit easier to keep them alive.
