So we had a member who wanted us to talk about Ozone Generators in our QOTD and I think it will make an excellent discussion! What is an Ozone Generator? Well I'm glad you asked and here is a nice brief description from Bulk Reef Supply.

Using Ozone will have many benefits in the aquarium:
  • Healthier corals and increased polyp extension due to the oxidation and breakdown of corals defensive toxins
  • Consistently clear water and proper light penetration due to the oxidation and breakdown of color pigments
  • Increased skimmer efficiency due to ozone causing waste particle to attract each other creating larger easier to filter particles
  • Oxidation and breakdown of fish waste and uneaten food
So the questions are as follows:

1. Are you using an Ozone Generator on your aquarium and if so have you experienced the benefits?

2. What is your general overall thoughts on Ozone Generators?

I have used ozone with regret. I wanted to clarify the water and remove any coral warfare toxins without a lot of carbon. I thought this would prevent HLLE in tangs. Tried it in a skimmer, which I don’t recommend because there is a strong odor that is bad for your lungs. Then I had a reactor. It really did not help with the water clarity. I had a carbon post filter. I found out it does destroy plastic and it is really harsh on equipment. I then had water leaking around the sump from acrylic areas and will not go back to ozone.
 
If what your wanting to do is add oxygen why not do what the people raising fish do run an oxygen generator or concentrator in the sump. Suppose to cut the grow out time on tilapia by a month.
 
I dont run one and currently have no plan to.
Seems like another part of an already complicated equation.

Enough said. Why even risk having that around? Some stuff goes wrong in your tank you have a spill... fair enough a minor harm... something goes wrong with this and you risk your health. No thanks.
 
I run an Oxydator which serves the same purpose essentially... and without the potential issues that ozone can create. If you're curious about ozone, I highly recommend reading up a bit on Oxydators. I have been running one for about 2.5 months and very happy with the results. Clear water, less algae growth (even nuisance), and many people claim several other benefits as well. Easy to use, no electricity, give it a look.

You beat me to it. I’ve been using an Oxydator for over a year now with the same results...
 
So I work in the HVAC industry and this is one of the tools that we use to effectively treat the air for odor, toxins, and bacteria/ viruses. That being said it is also used by water treatment plants for sanitizing water as well. Ozone is a naturally occurring element during thunderstorms created by lightning/ highly charged atmosphere. Ozone in normal amounts is not harmful to lungs, is tolerated by everyone and actually a good smell that most relate to the freshness of the air after a storm. However, ozone is incredibly unstable as a chemical and reverts to O2 and H2O2 oxygen and hydrogen perioxide pretty quickly. My guess is that if you are smelling it it in way to high of a concentration.
As for breaking down plastic.... UV breaks down plastic not ozone. The generation of ozone by using UVC lights will absolutely make non UV resistant plastic brittle. However, I would imagine that any product using these kind of lights would shelter exposure to some extent from degradation.
I personally am just starting my first saltwater tank( please feel free to comment on my thread) and will not be using ozone in the beginning. I can see the absolute benefit of it but will be starting off with UV only as a deterrent to algae and related tank nasties, not for ich/ velvet as I am absolutely quarantining everything based off so much invaluable advice here and so many awesome places offering free advice on years of experience.
 
I use the Ozotec ozone generator with the Milwaukee ORP controller. I have been using it for years. I actually just change the ORP probe on mine a couple days ago, so I even still maintain it to make sure it works properly. I will say, that I can certainly tell my water is clear. Now one of the biggest problems with ozone, is that it is generally not safe to breathe. I have taken care of this issue by having my exhaust from my skimmer plumbed into my old chimney flue for my furnace. You can see the yellow circle is where the ozone is injected into my skimmer. If you follow the yellow line out, you see my skimmer empties into a collection cup, and the exhaust from that follows out the top of my collection cup, over the top of my furnace intake pipes, and to a hole drilled into the blockoff of my old furnace flue. So, all ozone is exhausted to the outside; no ozone smell in my house.

They used to be a lot more prevalent on the marine side. Some people that keep larger fish or high end goldfish run ozone to help manage waste and ammonia buildup. But it behaves very differently in fresh water, it is much less stable and decays quickly.

You need to be careful running ozone, if you can smell it (begins to be detectable by humans at around 0.05ppm), you are above the daily exposure limits where it is considered toxic (depending on the regulatory body, exposure limit is 0.06 ppm/8hr day for 5 days a week, with 0.1 ppm requiring evacution). It can be toxic to marine life at around 0.02ppm, also potentially killing off the bacteria in your bio-filter. It has a higher redox potential than chlorine. Large ozone generators are often used as part of a mold remediation program (while the building is evacuated) after the bulk of the mold has been physically removed.

When run at appropriate levels, it can be really good for helping to prevent disease, or help keep it at bay as a fish's immune system fights it off. Ozone will oxidize ammonia and organic waste, breaking it down to less harmful substances, helping keep the water clear as some of these are the organics that are difficult to filter out or cause hazy and yellow water. If feeding into a skimmer, you need a kynar venturi as it will break down many plastics.

Ozone can be broken down with UV, so using an ozone reactor before a UV unit maybe helpful. Degassing to drive off ozone in a living space would be less than ideal, especially in a new home that is fairly tight unless you have an oversized HRV/ERV with a high exchange rate (which I would recommend for anybody that is running a larger system in a newer home, especially with an open top tank).


I tend to run smaller systems where ozone wouldn't be practical. I have considered trying one of the systems created for smaller fresh water tanks just to see how it works for organics as I run nano and pico tanks and have a tendency to feed quite heavily and don't always manage to hit my water change interval every week. But I have concerns with the offgassing in my small living space and don't need an excuse to skip a water change or two. It would also be another parameter to test for. Granted, testing is with an ORP probe, so readings are quite trivial to take.

I have been working towards setting up a breeding program, which is where most of my research into ozone has come from. I may consider it if I get to a point where I am running a few large systems with a heavy bioload, periodically running ozone on each system. Or possibly running it as part of a system to condition old water for reuse. But I don't think it is very practical for my current tanks and living space.

The purpose of running ozone isn't to increase dissolved oxygen levels, it is to increase the redox potential of the water to break down organics. Issues with nuisance algae will be reduced due to the cells being broken down when coming into contact with the highly charged oxygen molecules released as the ozone breaks down as well as there being less dissolved organic carbon in the water for the algae to uptake for the photosynthesis process.

The commercial food hatcheries are running stocking densities that would blow your mind. Pounds of fish per gallon. The oxygen gets pulled down so fast due to respiration and food breakdown that it becomes a limiting factor for growth (respiration being cell activity, not breathing, though the breathing is required to get the oxygen to the cells for said activity). Being able to keep oxygen levels at or above saturation ensures the fish are not in a hypoxic environment that is limiting growth. More mass to market faster equals higher profits per run.

Ozone and carbon can potentially "remove" more organics than a skimmer. And ozone will remove smells too.

Just got my ozonizer from a pool store. Heres 45 mins of 50-70mg/h. The best carbon didnt even make a dent in this color. Rox .8

Where do you find details/purchase one of these? I have never heard of one, but google didn't kick out very good results which is kind of odd....
 
I have been using ozone on my 132 gallon reef tank since it was set-up about two years ago. My LFS owner highly recommended the Ultralife Ozone 200mg/hr. It was easy to install and the only maintenance needed is changing the bulb about every year or two. The tank is exceptionally clear as I have two other fish only tanks to compare with and my ORP readings range from 400 to 420. The waste particles not removed by the skimmer seem to be grouped together better than my other two tanks. I have a bag of charcoal on top of my skimmer lid to cover the air holes which seems to help with capturing any ozone escaping from the skimmer. Overall, I have been happy with it and the cost for the ozone device was not too expensive.

Been using ozone most of the past 30 years. My original was a Saunders with a Saunders skimmer. Been through a number of failed ones since but been using an Ozotech Poseidon 200 over 6 years (never serviced) controlled by ORP probe on Apex. It feeds directly into a Reef Octopus 3000 int and has not damaged the skimmer whatsoever. I have an air pump that blows through an Ozotech cannister drier (seldom if ever dry it) into the Ozotech which came with black norprene tubing still in use six years later. That feeds into the larger silicone air input tubing on the skimmer. I actually just replaced that tubing last month for the first time. Seldom if ever smell ozone and I only run carbon occasionally.

It breaks down organics and makes it easier for the skimmer to remove. It keeps the water crystal clear and effectively kills bacteria and parasites in the water column like UV. Plus no bulb to replace.

Most people that complain about ozone smell aren't running it with an ORP controller (run mine 360-370) to properly dose it, as needed, and/or have a leak between it and the skimmer. Could also be a poorly designed skimmer. I generally run it at 30-40% output.

Overall with a larger, heavily stocked mixed reef I have always found it indispensable.

I did like 6 months ago on a different tank and the results were great, I don't know where I miss reading, got to run the water that the ozone comes in contact through carbon, I believe or you may get or you do get nitric acid if you don't do that. I set up the silicone gel or beads that absorb moisture before the ozone generator but when I read that I never got around doing the carbon filtration and so I stopped using it. But works great.
Also mine is controlled by ORP controller.

If and when I set it up the proper way, I will use it again.

I ran ozone for about 6 months and never saw any improvement, so I ditched it.

People don't use ozone to increase oxygen levels. It won't do that. Rather, it is a powerful oxidizer that breaks apart proteins. This can help with water clarity, skimming, or processing the constituent parts (NO3, PO4, etc) more quickly by bacteria and algae. Some fish farms will feed ozonizers with higher O2 concentration from a tank to increase ozone generation. But ozone itself will not increase O2 levels.
 
It’s not swimming pool, it’s a reef tank. How much are those gadgets?
