Do you fill with tap water at first?

Does anyone fill with tap water after they hook up the plumbing?

It’s my first tank. I have no idea about the water level. I think my return pump is too powerful for the drain size I have. I don’t want to put rodi in it to find out I have to drain it and switch out plumbing or equipment.

Any tips or tricks for a first timer doing her own plumbing and filling her first tank?

90g ready ready. Undecided if I’ll stick with 1 drain and 1 return or 1 drain, 1 emergency and two returns over the top of the tank.

I’ve done that. Do you mean line just tap water, not mixed, and drain once you have everything figured out? If so then that’s perfectly fine.

Google Herbie plumbing. The way to go. Much quieter than single drain.
Easy to determine if drain pipe is not enough for return pump. Once you decide what type plumbing.
You should shot for return pump gph 3-5x display tank size per hour. With head height figured in

Yes you can and should fill with tap water to check tank and plumbing for leaks, adjust sump height with simulated power outage, and to determine where/height to drill hole on return line to act as siphon break to avoid flood in power outage

Yes, I would drain the tap water. I would like to use tap to make sure I have no leaks and figure out the ideal water level.

It came with a 1” drain and 3/4” return. I think it’s an aqueon, over flow is off center on the left side.

Well...I bought a 2400 gph return pump I have a feeling the sump will run dry and the tank will overflow. I plan on having a manifold to run other equipment down the road when I get some experience under my belt but not at first so I think I need a different return pump?

Edit: head height is only 6 ft max.

What pump did you get. All manufacturers overate their pump’s output. Aside from maybe ehiem.
If you run herbie you can run about 12-1300 gph quietly. If you run single pipe drain maybe 800 max. Much less if you want less noise,

I guess there is no way to make the return plumbing any bigger is there? I’m limited to the bulk head that I have?

You could make it bigger. If you’re comfortable with drilling tank. But there’s no need. One inch drain is plenty on a 90 gallon.

Hi Trigger, If You used what drilled holes You have for drains & go over the back with returns, There will be plenty of drain to match the pump. That's how I do it.
Also, As mentioned above pumps are over rated & head loss will cut way down on the flow from the pump.
Shoot lost track of your original question ! It's OK to fill with tap water to check how plumbing is working & checking for leaks etc. Also it's fun dragging the garden hose thru the house !
