Great on the unions! I cut my drain pipes down to where they’re a couple of inches below the water line. It makes it easier to purge the air from your full siphon line. Not as much back pressure as having a long pipe stuck down in the water. If those fittings aren’t glued on the bottom side of the bulkhead you can experiment with different lengths. But the 1 or 2 inches below water line is a common recommendation. Mine came glued in, but it didn’t bother me cutting them off.
