I currently have a frag system that has a net water volume of ~65gal. It contains a single Pseudocheilinus hexataenia and a mix of SPS, LPS, and soft corals. In the sump, I have a single 7lb. rock, 1qt. of MarinePure spheres, and a single 8"x8"x1" MarinePure plate. I would like to keep my sump free of more bio-filtration, so I am considering the addition of sand within the display to provide more surface area for bacteria. I fought dinoflagellates in my previous system because I could not maintain consistent detectable nitrates and phosphates, and I don't want to battle that again in this system.
I'd love to know whether you have sand in your frag system. If so, I'd also love to see photos and know whether you have encountered challenges.
Thank you!
