Do you have "UV germicidal lamp" in your aquarium?

Hi, I am an marine aquarist living in Japan.

In Japan, we often use UV germicidal lights to kill bad bacteria in the water.

I have been using UV germicidal lamps for a long time because they are very effective against white spot disease.

Are UV germicidal lamps widely used worldwide?
Japan is a closed country, and I don't have any information about what aquarists are doing in other countries.

Also, what I would like to know is the connection method.
Is it connected to the overflow pipe in series? Or is it in parallel? Or is it connected separately from the overflow pipe?
I want to know the trend of the connection method.

thank you.

Hello,

UV sterilizers seem most effective when installed in series. With parallel installation, the 100% of the water does not pass through quickly enough. We call this dwell time. If the dwell time is longer than the reproductive stage of the parasite, the UV sterilizer struggles to keep up. I am also concerned that there are many bacteria and parasites that do not require a free swimming stage, and therefore never are exposed to the UV sterilizer.

Thank you for the detailed explanation.

Yes, I understand that it is better to connect them in series if it can kill the bacteria and parasites.

However, in a survey I took in Japan, more than half of the respondents said that they use parallel connection.
I also compared the results and found that the fish were definitely in better condition when they were connected in parallel.

In terms of water volume and flow rate, I choice the models with a margin of about three times the manufacturer's recommended value.
However, it seems that a series connection does not kill the bacteria.
(The staff at the store recommended me to use a parallel connection.)

I haven't done enough research yet, but it seems that many people who use models like the American-made QL-25 use series connection.
On the other hand, those who are using parallel connections may tend to use UV sterilizers manufactured by Japanese manufacturers.

There are a lot of puzzling things about the connection of UV sterilizers, so I would like to ask you about it.

Thank you so much.

Yes, we use UV. I use mine connected from the return pump in the sump then feeding the display
Thank you so much.
From your description, you are connecting the UV sterilizer in series.
What model of UV sterilizer are you using?

I am a big believer in UV sterilization. More than a year ago I almost left the hobby due to Ostreopsis in my display tank. I tried everything to rid it from the tank to no avail. I bought a 40watt sterilizer for my 180 tank and plumbed it directly to the tank as recommended by BRS TV. Within 3 days I had dramatic improvement and in 2 weeks it was gone never to return. The key is direct plumbing to tank and using high volume turnover thru the UV cavity. Check out the video on BRSTV. Good luck.
