I do keep some corals on the bottom of the tank they are just not on a sand bed as I went Bare Bottom.
I always wondered what a barebottom covered in zoas would look like

I have a frag rack in one quadrant of my sand for any new acquisitions to acclimate to light/flow/water params. I also have a couple of hundred snails that are invariably wandering around the sand (and the glass, the rock, in the overflows...everywhere).

What sand bed? Sand will eventually turn hard as concrete....then you gotta alotta hard work on tank teardown

A bit here and there.

I went from crushed coral to deep sand bed to shallow sand bed to finally bare bottom.

I like the contrast of a clean sandbed to be negative space against the rockscape but alas, I always end up filling in my negative space!

Do you prefer to leave your sand bed empty or do you like to cover it in corals? I personally think the lack of corals on the sand bed makes the corals on the rock stand out more (positive/negative space and all that) but i know some of us just cant stop collecting when the rock's covered

Clean sand bed, looks great

Cluttered sand bed, also looks great

Which do you prefer?
Its hard not to love both but I think I like uncluttered better.

Uh, what? Maybe you dose ALK and CA at the same time?? That can cause the sand to start fusing together. Otherwise, this has never happened to me or anyone I know.
