Do You Paint Your White PVC Plumbing ?

Do You Paint Your White PVC Plumbing ?

This is a question - rather than a criticism. If one has an open sump - and wants to make a statement - I can see the rationale. If one wants to mark input/output/other functions more clearly I can see a point to this. Maybe I should start a poll - why color your PVC..... ? How many of you color code the PVC plumbing in your basement. Apologeciatlly - and not trying to insult - because a lot od the set ups look 'cool' - but WHY? I would rather spend money/time on aquascaping, learning, finding good fish/corals than painting PVC.

First you can paint the PVC and do all the other stuff you are talking about. For me what made me want to do it was a post about sump set ups. People where showing off their plumbing and the cleanest best looking set ups had colored or painted PVC most were for no reason other then looks.

A couple of examples of what I’m talking about

Many of these examples are not painted but purchased colored already. Brs sells it colored. Home Depot does. Amazon. I’ve purchased formufit colored pvc from Home Depot to keep shipping and returns free

I know lol it looks pretty - but it was just my personal opinion - its like painting the inside of your toilet tank. No one ever sees it - on the other hand if you have an open sump - it looks cool. If you just like the look - it looks cool. If you color code different pipes so you know which one is doing what - it's cool. My personal opinion is that I would spend time doing other things for the tank. :). To each his /her own

That’s why I said painted or colored.

I show off my plumbing all the time... but its perfectly white which is also hard to do with purple primer lol

They make clear primer. Nothing wrong with white PVC it’s just to me painted looks better or colored if you want to spend a lot of money.

I actually heresy alert prefer clear tubing which allows more easy troubleshooting. Though I have always envied the colored pvc with the wires perfect etc. plumbing envy perhaps?

The problem I would think with clear tubing would be algae growth. Isn’t that what happens with clear tubes? In any case because of the grow lights my ATS uses I would not use clear PVC or tubing.

Does anyone that has used the Krylon Fusion blue paint for their pvc know if it matches the BRS blue pipe at all? Working on adding a tank to my system and relocating my sump, and it would be an extra $200+ to use all BRS pipe vs standard pvc and a few cans of Krylon. But if the color is way off, I will buy the BRS pipe for where I have to extend existing pipes since it is out in the open. TIA!

It isn't an exact match but it's VERY VERY close. You can order from formufit direct for a pretty good price. You can only order in bulk but the cost is almost half BRS but you have to pay for shipping...

"Close" works for me, I'm not crazy OCD about it, just want it to look decent since it is out in the open. So VERY VERY close will definitely work for saving me over $200, not to mention its easier to go buy extra from Menards than order more from BRS if I come up short (or change my design plan halfway through....)

Did you clean the pipe with acetone or anything to get rid of the writing? Or just spray over it all? Any tips? I will glue everything together ahead and tape off fittings/valves when painting.

I'm very detail oriented - I just don't care what color the pipes are.

Well like most things in life there are multiple degrees of detailed, you just happen to not be in the "my pipes must be this color to match my favorite color of the rainbow" class of detailed oriented. You know what, that is ok, we still you are cool.:)

I always use krylon spray pakn for plastics works great!
