Hi all,

Was curious if anyone soaks their pellets to soften them up prior to feeding.

I have always just added the pellets to my feeding ring and let the fish go at it, but I know some people say soaking is a must.

Also, if you soak...how do you prevent them from just sinking to the bottom immediately?

Thanks!

I started soaking them for 15 mins in Garlic Oil and Fish V , do this with frozen Mysis too. I slowly dose so the fish have time to eat it before it sinks

Soften them up with water before putting them in...water. Nope. Unless its soaking in vitamins, what's the point?

I always soak my pallets:

Sorry I couldn't resist.

I feed New Life Spectrum 1mm - 1.5mm pellets. I do not soak in liquid. Never have I had a discernible problem. Fish are always ravenous. If I want them to float, I drop them gently on the top. If I want them to sink, I throw them on the surface with a downward motion.

I never have. I assume if they're too dry for the fish they'll soften up in a few minutes. I had actually never heard of anyone soaking their pellets with exceptions of adding vitamins, garlic extract, etc.

Years ago, I lost some fish to bowel obstructions when they were fed too many Hikari cichlid pellets too quickly. Those swelled like crazy when wet. Not all pellets do this though.

I no longer keep cichlids but I also switched to gel diets that would avoid this issue. It's also easy to add medication or supplements but they only sink (though I suppose there's a clever way to make them float).
