There has been a discussion on our local club's site about the use of 3M's Dobie and the Original Magic Eraser to clean the inside of acrylic and glass tanks. I was at one of our well respected LFS and saw them recommend and use the Dobie. They used it on their acrylic display tank. I have to say that it worked amazingly well. They're one of the top acrylic tank manufactures in the SE, as well have a nationally respected line of skimmers and various other reef equipment. I went and got the Dobie. I read the back of the package after purchasing it and in bold letters it reads "Not for aquarium use." I wanted to see what you all had to say about the product. We all know that Interceptor was not designed for red bugs, but works wonders!

I buy magic erasers from the dollar store, think they come in two packs. They work great, glass is always spotless and never comes close to scratching the tank up. Just be careful not to buy ones that are "scented" or contain soap in them because obviously that won't benefit water quality. Great way to clean your tank just keep it simple!

Interesting. Are there cleaning chemicals in them or is it just the material that cleans things?

i would be interested in using this on my skimmer for cleaning. tagging along.

I looked on the package and see no ingredients list. I am thinking it is the material that does the cleaning (which hopefully would mean it is reef safe).

I've been using the magic eraser for my acrylic frag tank for the last 3-4 months. I've read up on the product and it is most definitely the material and not a chemical doing the cleaning. The magic eraser using a "new" technology which makes it extremely porous on a very micro scale. The pores in the foam give it an extreme scrubbing capability which is also great because once one part of the sponge has been used to the point where it is no longer spongy, you can then cut it off and you have more scrubbing capacity. I take a single sponge and cut it into 1x2 sections that work great.

I have a little bit of everything in my frag tank from high end acros to nice chalices and zoas. No negative effects after 3 months tells me it is perfectly safe. Just giving you guys my opinion. No idea about the 3M product.

I have been afraid to use them because magic erasers took the shiny finish off a spot on my counter. they are like micro abrasion sponges, so I assumed they would cloud acrylic.

but I guess I was wrong?

I need something, the mag cleaner keeps getting sand particles in it and scratching my starphire

I've been using the "Magic Eraser" sponge for a few months on my new acrylic tank with no ill-effect on the corals or acrylic. You have a lot more control with the magic eraser sponge, however, the downfall is that you have to stick your whole arm in the tank. Some people have attached the sponge to a magnet or another cleaning tool -- I'm sure that would be a work well too. Not that you asked, but for the outside, I use Novus 1 and the polish pads once a week or so and just a clean cloth towel in-between.

Yeah the ones I've seen have soap

I have used both and prefer the Dobie. The Magic Eraser falls apart on me. I have a 300 acyrlic and keep the sponge in the Dobie, making it easier to scrub off coralline and algae.

I wonder is this woukd work on my waterfall wall. its textured abs I think

I take a Dobie and cut out the foam and stretch it over my algae magnet and it works great have been doing this for years and years

The Magic Eraser is made up of melamine foam, which is formaldehyde-melamine-sodium bisulfite copolymer. The original magic eraser (it says original on the package) contains no cleaning agents. Some have Febreze or other chemicals in them, which will devastate your tank if you use them, but make sure it's the original and it is absolutely 100% safe to use.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formaldehyde
