So I was just finishing feeding the tank, pumps start back up, and I see the left koralia PH running backwards. Turned off pumps, restarted, running fine. I spend a lot of time not in front of my tank or near by. So having equipment working properly is key. I always knew this might happen, just hoped it wouldn't and really hoped it wouldn't do it after a power outage.
So I would like new powerheads. I am not a big fan of the MP's due to the price and also the extreme possibility of critters getting in the PH and being killed or getting stuck and would rather not use covers if I can help it (I have had numerous types of snails and hermits go on the koralias and not be injured). What would you suggest for new powerheads? I have a 90g tank with LPS and softies, will not being doing SPS in this tank.

You could order a new cover and that will solve the problem.. They send them for free I ordered 8 covers... get them in a week and always have spares.

There is a rubber bumper inside the front cover. When the "fan" goes backward, the blades hit the bumper and the rotation reverses back to forward flow. Sometimes the rubber bumper comes off, and the flow can persist in the reversed direction. If you can find the bumper, you can glue it back on. If you can't find it, then you'll have to wait for the replacement cover. I've had 6 koralias running almost 4 years now, and have had to replace bumper several times

Oh! I examined both PH's and both still have the bumper, it was a bit calcified so I cleaned them both. Thank you so much! Do you just e-mail saying you need new covers?

If they are Hydor Evolutions, conact Hydor Customer Service with the model number and they will send you new improved front covers free of charge, they are warrantied for two years but I have never heard of anyone being questioned. I had over 2.3 million starts and stops on my Evo 1400's on a RKL set to switch back and foth every 30 seconds before recently switching to the new Jebao WP-25's which I love.
I had no complaints with the Evolutions and have kept them as back ups but the Jebao was something different with its built in controller at about the same price point as the Evo 1400-1500.

Look for cracking and flex in the front grills, the rubber bump stop may still be there but it can flex and not do its reversal job properly. I have also posted a fix for the front covers where I glued a thing strip of black ABS to the outside vertical bar to strengthen the cover and never had one fail after that. The new replacement covers and those on the new 1500 etc. series are thicker so should not crack.
