so i made a mixture of 1 gallon brs soda ash into a 2 gallon bucket with a sealed lid. is this a bad idea? can the alkalinity precipitate in the air inside the bucket or something?

It’s the appropriate way to do it, but alk supplements generally get close to the solubility limit so can be hard to dissolve and can precipitate if they get cold. Warming should redissolve it.

what if i just mix it up every time i open the bucket?

There should not need to be solids continually present if the bucket was clean. I designed this recipe and it is fully soluble if made properly and not reduced well below normal room temp.

It isn't optimal to get undissolved sodium carbonate crystals dosed to the tank because they may land on or in delicate organisms before fully dissolving.
