How many (if any) medicines or disease cures there are in our tanks? I can’t help but look at something like my rainbow acan and not think about that. The ocean hold some of the worlds best medicines and poisons and I am willing to bet there is something we have not discovered yet in the ocean that would stop cancer or cure Alzheimer’s and is a super vitamin. It would be nuts if the next big medical breakthrough came from a torch or some zoa’s or something and we just look at them every day and not see the potential. I was just wondering if I am the only one who thinks that.

Never thought of that until now

I actually have been looking into this for a long time. There are several corals (mainly softies) that are used in a variety of pharmaceuticals. The terpenoids found in these corals are used in the wild to combat stony coral growth, but with modification can be used to treat cancers and other chronic illnesses

Even common corals including several species in the genera Sinularia, Sarcophyton, Lobophytum, and the infamous Briareum violaceum (GSP) are undergoing research for use in clinical trials. Other coral genera like Nephthea, Capnella, and Cladiella are promising candidates as well.

Some species of cnidarians not found in our tanks like sun anemones and certain gorgonians from the Caribbean already have products out there
(https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8567178) ShK toxin from S. helianthus as a potassium channel inhibitor
(https://www.hindawi.com/journals/ecam/2014/184959/) more assorted research on coral biochemistry

And of course for any true nerds out there who drool over research papers... I have the perfect site for you

There are several other species that I could talk about but for the sake of other readers I'll leave it at this

Cheers!
