Its a ball sponge. I don't know why they throw out those spikes but they do.
Are these pineapple or balls fairly recent to the hobby? Or just disappear over time? Cause I know they are a good filter feeder but I don't think I've ever had one over 25 years, white sponge from beginning and still hanging on a bit....ah maybe I did way back and I was drunk in my 20's lol...That is a pineapple sponge. Harmless filter feeders. Those "spikes" are soft and don't sing. It throws them out to connect to different areas. I've got some attached to rock 3" away

Does look mighty odd to my eyes too...but, hey maybe, what do I know lol.These don’t look like any pineapple sponges I’ve ever seen? Maybe it’s a cauliflower sponge impersonating an anemone? Hey we’re here to learn.![]()
