I wanted to list a few fish I am interested in and was wondering if anyone out there has personal experiences with these fish. Temperament, active swimmers or hide, eating, size tank? I have a 40 gallon tank with a lid. Thanks for your help

1. Caribbean Black Cap Basslet(Gramma melacara)

2. Blue Jaw Tilefish(Hoplolatilus starcki)

3. Yellow Candy Hogfish(Bodianus bimaculatus)

4. Gold Midas Blenny(Ecsenius midas)

5. Fiji Sailfin Blenny(Atrosalarias fuscus)

How are the gold minus, sail fin, starry, and lawnmower benny when it comes to personality?

Thanks for all your help

I got my first Midas about 2 weeks ago. He was pretty skittish at first and the powder blue chased him around for a couple of days. Now he swims around and will come up to the glass when you walk up. He found a nice roosting spot in a hole on the side of one of the rocks and will just sit there checking things out.

Jimbo,

How big is he and did you buy him from your local fish store?

Thanks

Black cap basslets are a lot like royal grammas in care, they just get a little larger. They pick a cave and hang out near it, usually visible and out, but not a super active fish. They are hardy and peaceful, unless a fish ventures too close to it's cave, then it will display to get them away.

Blue jaw tilefish are peaceful fish that are accomplished jumpers. Tilefish frequently suffer from swim bladder infections from being improperly decomposed during collection, it takes between 3 days and two weeks to manifest itself. If it doesn't have swim bladder problems they can be quite hardy.

Yellow candy hogfish have always ended up getting aggressive in tanks I have seen them in and feel they are best suited to a fowlr with other aggressive fish. They are quite hardy, will eat cuc, and are accomplished jumpers.

Midas blennies are a great reef fish, they are in the water column more than most other blennies. In the wild they mimic, and school with squamipinnis anthias.

Fiji sailfin blennies are a fine addition, they are pretty hardy, though can be territorial toward other fish that want to be near the rocks.

I had a yellow candy hogfish in my 75g and it was a model citizen until it reached about 3 inches, then it became a holy terror towards my shrimp. It killed my skunk cleaners by biting off their claws and legs. Took over a week to trap it out.

Like eatbreakfast, I have a black cap. Great little fish, awesome colors. He will swim out now and then, always comes out if you go near the tank, thinks he's getting feed. They say they are semi aggressive but all he does is open his mouth at the fish in his space. Funny however he shares a den with my flasher wrasse at night. The den belonged to the wrasse first, then I added the back cap as my last fish, he spotted the den and now both sleep in it. Could be because they were in qt together. I find his temperament is just a bluff.

Eatbreakfast - thanks for all the insight. I am leaning toward a black cap basslet and the midus benny. I love to hear peoples personal experiences.

I fish that I really want is Popeye Catalufa Soldierfish (Pristigenys serrula) - anyone have any experience with these?

They often come in and go on a hunger strike, but can usually get started eating live ghost shrimp and from there more common foods. They will avoid brighr lighting. They get to about a foot in length and will eat anything rhey can fit in their mouth, including inverts and smaller fish.

ok another fish question....... Is a yellow headed jawfish more hardy than a blue spotted jawfish? How are they different besides color?

Blue spotted jaws do better in cooler temps than most keep their reefs, mid 60's-low 70's. If kept higher will have a significantly shortened life.
