I just set up a 80 gallon mixed reef system at my home recendtly. I have mostly SPS and LPS but I did add a Blueberry Gorgonian and a Red and Yellow Polyp Sea Whip that I feed heavily. Knowing that the heavy feeding will increase my nitrate levels I decided to add the Seachem Matrix to the sump instead of Bioplastic and reactor chamber.
How does this stuff work??? Is it no different than adding more live rock? Did I just waste money on basicly rock rubble?
It says that it reduces Ammonia, Nitrates, and Nitrites without ever having to replace the medium but how? I thought the only biological way of reducing nitrates was through anaerobic bacteria. Does this stuff harbor anaerobic bacteria inside of the medium? It also says that if rate of flow is high then Seachem Matric for Koi Ponds is recomended. Only difference is that the Koi Pond Matrix granuals are just larger chunks vs smaller grains.
I'm a little skeptical because my LFS recommended it over the Bioplastic because didn't carry bioplastic or GFO.
