Is it the same with magnesium?

I think so, but as randy said, there is a slight concern in the impurities of some products and raising that too fast. I have dosed 100ppm magnesium in one day in a 75 gallon with no issues (brs magnesium chloride)

Calcium can be anywhere from 400-550 ppm, IMO.
The exact value doesn't matter since it is not growth limiting in this range.

You wouldn't need to test regularly. You are more likely to see random test kit variation than actual changes.
