Hey folks...new member here and first post. I've been plagued from about my 3rd months of having a tank by parasites. I believe Velvet wiped out my entire tank, 4 fish, over 3 months ago. I treated with Kich Ich and Rally by Ruby Reef and went fallow nearly four weeks. Had to introduce a new fish sooner than planned because my QT tank appeared to spike ammonia and I didn't want to injure it that way. Everything was fine until a month later another new addition brought Ich with it. I had QT'd and Hydroplex dipped it but it still showed signs of Ich or maybe Velvet, I'm not sure. Now that same fish seems to be clear but appears to be breathing heavy. I am wondering if it has an internal parasite. It is a juvenile Clown Trigger about 2.5" long. I gave up on Kich Ich and Rally two weeks ago and gave in to copper with Copper Power because of reading it is 60x less toxic than other copper treatments. So per my title of this post, will Copper Power treat any internal parasites or do I need something else? Thanks for your help and advice! After about 8 months of this off and on I'm about to give my fish away and shut the tank down.

Welcome to R2R! Copper will only effect external pathogens. For internal youd want to go the route of food soaked in medication.
Good advice^

If you add metroplex or general cure to your food that would treat internal parasites. General cure treats parasites and worms since it contains metronidazole and praziquantel.

Add one scoop (the scoop that comes with the metro or focus) focus and one scoop metro or General cure to 1 tablespoon of prepared food.

Thanks folks...where to buy this? Does Petsmart or Petco sell them or do I need to check my LFS?

Breathing heavy would not generally be a symptom of internal parasites.

Flukes, velvet, Ich, ammonia, low oxygen levels would all be better suspects.

I've wondered about low oxygen levels since adding Copper Power. However I did turn my skimmer back on yesterday so that should help I hope. Since I have Hydroplex dipped this trigger twice in the past two weeks I would think he would be external parasite free plus the Copper Power. It has been swimming more into the flow of the water return so is that a symptom of low oxygen too?

Swimming into the flow could be low oxygen, but its a classic velvet symptom.

Have you read the disease sticky threads? If not, it is well worth your time.

Hydroplex and Kick ich are not proven effective and rally ,though useful , will not eliminate ich or velvet.

4 weeks fallow is not long enough. What is your copper level and how are you testing it?

I think this is velvet. Maybe Ich.

Well considering I believe I’ve battled both it could be. I have ordered a better copper test kit today but I think it’s around 1.5-2.0ppm range. I added 5ml more today because I’ve done two water changes in the past week and a half.

Get the hanna checker. Test at least daily and make sure your water change water is dosed.to the proper level before you add it.

Wait... are you dosing g this to to your display tank or a qt/hospital tank?

To my DT...concerned all fish are compromised. Last night all three fish were swimming around fine and eating. I wake up this morning and my Emperor Angel was on its side under the dryrock. When I pulled it out it is still alive but probably not going to make it. I'm done. If all my fish die I'm tearing down the tank and selling. I've got well over $1500 into a 40g tank and have battled this nearly the entire 10 months I've had it going other than the cycle weeks before I added fish.

Copper should be used in a hospital/qt tank. It may be possible in a display but I'm not familiar with doing so.

Your issues are why people advocate qt and stocking with appropriate sized fish.

I wish you the best and hope you continue in the hobby

I have appropriate sized fish. All three of mine are juveniles with the triggers only 2.5" and the angel 3'. I used Copper Power as a last resort over a week ago after weeks of Kich Ich and Rally treatments. Just when I think I have it beat something else goes wrong. I'm pretty sure this is internal this time as the fish look fine externally from what I can see. They have each been hydroplex dipped at least once, the angel twice and the clown trigger three times. I had a 29g and 75g tanks for years in the 90s and NEVER once had a disease take a fish out. I literally just received PraziPro from Amazon as i was typing this so I will see what happens with it.

I apologize if that sounded rude. I did not intend it to be.

But , triggers and large Angels are not appropriate for a 40 gallon tank. More stress means more issues.

There is a thread here somewhere about dosing copper in a dt. I'm just boarding a plane I will.see ifi can find itwhen I land.

I tried to follow the 1" of fish per 5g of water rule. Thus why I went with juveniles. They stay close to their cover when small to avoid being dinner for a predator. My plan was to move them into a 75g sometime next year but my experience this time around has been so poor that I'm burnt out. Plus my wife has not had a pleasant experience watching so many fish die and has a sour taste. I'm bummed big time but just can't do it much longer. It's not fun...

I'm new to the community page also, and I def know your pain buddy, I've been fighting with brroklynella for about a week now and have lost a purple tang and a niger trigger so far...

Are you certain you are dealing with brook? Do you have pictures of the fish?
