I believe at one point I read somewhere that the return section is best. I could be wrong
Based on the advice I received, the return section is NOT a good idea because the components are concentrated and will collect within the return pump internals, accelerating an event of failure. I have mine dropping in the refugium now to help them mix with a higher volume of water prior to hitting the return pump.

I imagine that only matters if running an internal return pump. External return where only the impeller is in contact with the water shouldn't be generating any heat for carbonate buildup or precipitation to occur.
@dgrigor02 an external pump will still generate heat with the motor and spinning parts, the only difference being that heat isn't transferred to the tank water in the same fashion as a submersible pump since the pump body is typically air cooled. They function the same fundamentally, and water moves through them in an identical fashion with an inlet, impeller, and outlet. In my mind, they are both just susceptible, with external pumps maybe slightly less so. In the thread I linked above, there were issues with Iwaki pumps which are external due to this exact issue.
