I recently noticed a white looking smudge on my clownfish’s face. From what I have heard ich is white specs on the fish but to me this doesn’t really look like specs. Unfortunately the fish is white making it very difficult to see whether the fish has white specs or not. He is very active and eating well so I hope it’s nothing too serious. Any help would be appreciated

Definitely hard to tell. It there any other fish in the system to indicate that ich is present?

In the tank there is a cleaner shrimp he is completely fine but I’m not even sure if they can get ich. The other clownfish is also completely fine. These clownfish have only been in the tank about a week and a half and during the first week I witnessed a lot of bashing into the glass from these guys as they got used to their new environment so it’s a possibility that there is just a bit of an injury on the face from the contact with the glass. Both the clowns are now used to their new tank and no longer hit the glass so I will keep an eye on him and see if the injury heals. I will also try and get a better video of him

Cleaner shrimp can not “catch” it. But they can be a carrier of the parasite. Clownfish are also pretty resilient to ich as they have a thick slime coat to protect them from catching it. I would just keep an eye on them make sure they are eating and all should be good!

I’m not sure how much experience you have with ich but do you believe a fish with ich would look worse and worse each day. My fish doesn’t appear to be losing any of the white smudge on his face however it also isn’t getting any worse.

Yup, they would stop eating as the gills become inflamed, leading to loss of energy, lethargic, sometimes glassy eyes, they may scratch and rub rocks in an attempt to rid itself, when fish get ick they will display a combination of these things. They die, but slowly. Remember, the goal of this parasite is not to kill fast, they do need a live fish host for feeding.
There are some cases where really healthy strong well fed fish fish have shown to be immune.
