Does Prime actually "Detoxify" free ammonia, NH3?

Do these only bind ammonia for a short period of time?

I do not know what happens to the aminomethanesulfonate that forms. It might eventually break down to release ammonia, or not.
 
I would suggest there is no in vivo test - that says for organisms (fish, etc) - that Prime does not detoxify ammonia. Instead there are chemical tests that suggest that free ammonia is not reduced. This is a different question. IMHO - the real question is - How often is ammonia a real problem - as compared to not. I.e. there are multiple posters that have had fish in distress that have added prime that have improved. until there are in vivo tests - all anyone can say is that in the methods used by the experimenters no evidence was shown that prime reduced free ammonia in their testing method. No more no less.

The mechanism that Seachem claims is refuted. Since Seachem provides no data, what is there to say it does anything useful?

Anecdotes that fish improved, with no control fish, is no more convincing than a cold that went away after eating applesauce.

No - I disagree - there are not hundreds of reports of people getting better from a cold from eating applesauce. But - I see the analogy. My point was simple the chemical tests are not in-vivo. Prime does not claim to 'remove' ammonia - but merely detoxify it for a short period of time. I am not convinced that the testing done proves that the ammonia is not lowered - due to the fact that the tests used are not specific nor sensitive enough to do so - nor are other possibilities excluded. I'm not a fan of Prime - I'm just saying - multiple people have had remarkable success using it quite soon after adding it to a tank (for whatever unexplained reason) - Agree with you - thats not 'proof' - but its also not just to be brushed aside. If we're going to do that - we can toss out cipro for anemones, fluconazole for algae, etc. Right?

Well, you are welcome to your opinion on the tests, but I do not agree with your assessment. We have hashed out those hypotheses over the many pages of this thread, and the experiments do hold up and refute Seachem's claims directly that such a test as we used WILL show that Prime works. But they do not in the hands of Reefers.

A: A Nessler based kit will not read ammonia properly if you are using Prime®... it will look "off scale", sort of a muddy brown (incidentally a Nessler kit will not work with any other products similar to Prime®). A salicylate based kit can be used, but with caution. Under the conditions of a salicylate kit the ammonia-Prime® complex will be broken down eventually giving a false reading of ammonia (same as with other products like Prime®), so the key with a salicylate kit is to take the reading right away. However, the best solution ;-) is to use our MultiTest™ Ammonia ki
t; it uses a gas exchange sensor system which is not affected by the presence of Prime® or other similar products. It also has the added advantage that it can detect the more dangerous free ammonia and distinguish it from total ammonia (total ammonia is both free ammonia and non-toxic ionized forms of ammonia).
 
On the remarkable success, I think that very few reefers are qualified to claim that a remarkable success took place. Few know exactly what happens to a given fish at a given ammonia level, even if they were able to measure it accurately.

By their own admission, Seachem does not require any evidence of their own to make a claim for Prime (for nitrate). Just a few reefers saying it seemed useful was convincing to them, and yet it seems nearly impossible for it to have that effect just by the number of molecules that could be in the Prime bottle and the amount of nitrate it would take to cause issues.
 
@Malcontent I didn't look at Amquel specifically. But I did look a little bit at ClorAm-X (same compound).
I could not measure it decreasing ammonia (in pH-corrected samples). The NH3 films showed no difference, and the chemical tests are interfered with as they are with all dechlorinating compounds.
I don't know if it works or not, or if not why not.

I just know I can't measure any verifiable ammonia decrease, but there are a bunch of other ways available ti the hobbyist that verifiably drop NH3, so I'll stick to recommending those, and recommend against ones that can't possibly be verified.
(p.s. throw Ammo-lock in the same bucket too - presumably different compound / mechanism - still not verifiable ammonia decrease.)

Mitigation strategies:
I have no faith in Prime, nor in the hydroxymethanosulfonate Amquel, ClorAm-X etc. There's a chance I could be wrong about the HMS but because NH3 films (ammonia alert badges) don't show they drop ammonia (and they do not in my testing), then I will not recommend or rely on them. Their only known effect I'm certain of is to interfere with total ammonia tests.

Aerate the heck out of the system, maximize flow, run normal light but maybe extend for a few hours. Dump in bottles of biospira and fritz turbostart. Acidify the water (HCl is fine) down to the buffer level for aragonite around ~pH 7.6. Carbon dose - with aeration.
Water change when you can.
These things are all 100% verifiably useful in reducing toxic ammonia.

I'm sorry in my post above I said that there is nothing to show that Prime does not LOWER ammonia - what I meant to say is there is nothing in those experiments that show Prime does not DETOXIFY ammonia in vivo. I agree with you - that based on the testing that was done, with the methods used, that there was no clear evidence that Prime lowers free ammonia (and as you said/implied - Seachem says that it at least a couple of their tests should do so).
 
we just had poster Amy lose all her fish in a holding bucket during an emergency tank takedown and transfer in the general forum (seam split required emergency move). I presume this to be the rare case of true ammonia lethality due to factors unique to the holding vessel vs a reef display

it could be oxygen agreed, but without surface area and with concentrated fish ammonia also comes into play here as a real risk. pH was not known at the time of loss: assume any pH trending that may apply to several fish and crabs held in clean saltwater.

knowing prime isn't helpful, would the team here agree she would have been safer simply doing preemptive water changes, or, adding bottle bac known to carry bioload via suspension activity like so many fish-in cycles show

for emergency concentrated fish holding containers lacking any prep time, what's the safest hedge against ammonia/sometimes they can't make up gallons and gallons of changewater to refresh, and the keeper had no biomedia handy to transfer over in a hang on back

*hindsight, albeit slow and entirely too late: she may have been safest moving over some rocks and no sand, inputting a bubbler or some sort of current into the holding vat

that may have been the safest practical conservation means given the speed of setup needed

-Well, I was able to get the stock tank from my LRS and they checked my numbers and ammonia had spiked so incredibly high overnight, I’m hoping now that it’s had a complete water change and I’ll be doing water changes every day now that it will level out and everything that has survived. Will stay alive-
 
I worked with ClorAmX after reading the patent. I was optimistic about seeing an effect. I could not reproduce the patent observations with three different ammonia sensing films and a spectrophotometer. Also note the large concentrations being used in the patent versus the recommended dosage.
And the answer:??? BTW - we're concentrating on reef tanks - there are like 3-5 products available at Petsmart today - the declare they detox ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite.

Curious - how do you know 'prime isn't helpful'

I haven’t read all the posts in this thread so apologies if this has already been mentioned but when I was reading about prime detoxifying ammonia in freshwater I remember reading that the amount it could detoxify was determined by the ph of the water.

something like if the ph was 7 it could detox 1 ppm of ammonia for a day and if the ph was 6 it could detox 2ppm for a day (I may have the numbers flipped as it’s been a while since I read about it). Is it possible this is why we don’t see any affects in a reef tank since the ph is usually in the 8s? Im curious if what I’d read is just nonsense after reading this post lol.

It’s a cold cruel world filled with false claims. It’s seriously stomach churning sometimes.

In my opinion, the claims on nitrate toxicity reduction in marine systems is nonsense. I go into lengthy detail to justify that opinion of mine here:
