I have a bottle of Seachem reef dip that I've had for five maybe ten years. I want to dip a hammer that I got a few days ago that's not looking great. Would you use this? It's elemental iodine according to the label

Most seachem products have a sticker with expiration but I have used 2-3 year bottle of dip with no issue

Generally it depends on the storage and the dip in question - iodine should be fine if it was stored in a reasonable setting and not open. That said, curious about your issue with the hammer as iodine can be abrasive for corals and has specific usage depending on the problem.

I looked for a date. Probably go ahead and use it. Guess it won't hurt even if it doesn't help

The dip has been opened and used years ago. The hammer is extremely receded and appears freshly fragged. I thought the iodine would help it heal and give it boost.

That's good that it didn't expire. I would consider what you are attempting to accomplish first though as any dip can hurt as much as it can help depending on the problem. For example, iodine is antibacterial but by its mechanism can affect healthy tissue as well. A good example of where it can help is if you needed to frag off an area of the hammer that was dead and you had some exposed flesh so it can help the healing process. Something more risky would be a more internal infection causing flesh to recede, which may benefit more from an antibiotic.

Ah just saw this, was posting at the same time. Sounds like it would help, might also benefit to being fed directly if you can.
