I'd like to add a wrasse to my tank but I'm not sure if the type of sand I have is OK for them. It is the black hawaiin sand which is large grained. In the past I've only used sugar grain sand. Is this too coarse?

Which wrasse Adam? Many don't require a sand bed at all. If you're considering one of the Macropharyngodon(Leopard) or Halichoeres , then, the finer the sand, the better.

I'm not 100% of which one just yet. Top two, as of right now, are Hoeven's or yellow Dorris.

Both your suggesting would require sand. I think the black hawiian sand will be fine. Im using carib sea ocean direct and my melanurus doesnt have any issues.

Thanks.

I have sand, it is just a matter of my sand's suitability since it is coarse grained.
+3 on the black sand being okay.

If you find that your wrasse is getting a little beat up by your coarser sand, you can always get a few cups of sugar grain and make a custom bed for her somewhere in the tank.

Thanks everyone. My plans for adding a wrasse are on hold for a bit. Apparently the berghia nudibranches I was confident all died are still in my tank. Spotted one yesterday. Not that they've cleaned up my aiptasia problem!:mad::mad:

I also concur you'll be just fine with black sand.

Do you guys think tropic eden reef flakes is ok for a leopard wrasse?
I would say that any flakes are not ideal and that you should vary a fish's diet with frozen, live blackworms, nori, or if you're up for the best option you can chop up fresh seafood from your grocer!

Dude, I think he was referring to the sand called tropic eden reef flakes. Good pointers on the best foods!

If you are trying to feed this to your fish, you're doing it wrong.
