Does Seachem Reef Fusion 1/2 go bad?

Hey all,

I found 1 bottle each of Reef Fusion in a large lot of aquarium supplies I bought earlier this year. It was supplied from a local aquarium maintenance man who passed last year. I don't see a date on the bottles, so I have no idea how old they are.

Does anyone know if they should still be good do they go "bad" at some point. Both bottles are open and ~1/2 full. Since I have them, I'd love to use them up to help maintain Ca and Alk levels before buying something else.

Based on Seachem's website description of these products, they appear to be largely calcium chloride solution with some added trace elements, and an alkalinity solution that is (probably) composed of sodium carbonate/bicarbonate. The fundamental chemicals involved should be stable in aqueous solution for many years. The only aspect that has at least a possibility of occurring is very slow concentration of the solutions by water vapor transmission through the plastic bottles. I would think this would be so slow as to not be a concern for a reef aquarist; and typically, one bases one's dosing on the results of calcium and alkalinity test kits, so a slight change in concentration over the label values shouldn't be a big deal.

By your tanks uptake and testing. I believe the calcium is what makes it not 1:1. So you will probably be dosing less cal than alk. I used to use this product and switched to ESV on RHFs recommendation as this is a true 1:1.

Yes, I’d start off dosing both parts equally to maintain alk and then expect to have to adjust calcium to meet the demand.
