I just wanted to check if any of our reefers have the Sun shine on their tanks during the day...

checkout the difference on sunlight vs your current lighting. I have 36" t5's on my 65g, running ATI 2x blue+ and 2x coral+

I have seen some spectacular reefs down here that use Solatubes for lighting. I have always wanted to try to build out a display and try natural sunlight for growing SPS.

Why do people say natural sunlight can cause algae blooms? I've seen this printed in books too.
There's plenty of beautiful tanks out there that use natural sunlight as it's main light source. My nearest public aquarium has a tank that is lit 100% by the sun and there's next to no algae in there. They're carnivorous ocean fish and sharks, so nothing that eats algae and I've never seen signs of a CUC in there.

Not sure either. If you don't have excess nutrients, all the sunlight in the world won't make algae grow.

In the past I had a skylight over a 75, twice a year (( for about a month at a time )), the sun would hit the tank, never had any increase in algae, and the part of the tank that the sunlight hit looked great;

My tank gets sun a couple times a year for awhile in the mornings. I think it's good for what it hits. Always wanted the do a SolaTube tank, hadn't thought about it but now with Kessils you could supplement pretty easily inside the tubes..... Hmmmmmm:bigsmile:

My tank is in our sunroom!

My leopard wrasse comes out at sunrise and disappears around sunset. I even notice he sleeps in on overcast cloudy days!

3 walls of my house are mostly windows and I have sky lights. Year around my tank has sunlight. I don't have algae in my tank.

Sunlight doesn't cause algae. Bad husbandry causes algae. My tank got sunlight a lot and I never had algae outbreaks. It's all about water quality and maintenance.

And yes, my tank gets a bunch of sunlight in the morning, then the light kick on after it passes the tank. No algae problems unless I do it myself by over feeding.
