Does this aquascape "FLOAT" your boat?

ive never dived before but i dont think rocks float. doing some googling, CACO3 is 2.31 g/cm therefore it cant float. it would look cool if there was a rock wall covered in coral and it was like a giant acro skeleton covered in coral. and it would be like the reef wall

I must say that I've never seen this before. BUT..! It's awesome looking! My question is how do you get it to look that way? Some kind of a shelf?

Normally I would say no to something you would not see in a natural setting, but in this case it could be a snapshot of a ledge with a nice overhang.

The ability to leave more of the bottom clear for other ground based creatures or corals or even sun corals under the main structure would be nice.

I can imagine a few ways to do this with support to the back wall or even support to the tank bottom through some other structure that would extend beneath the substrate.

I can imagine circulation being improved as well for removal of detritus if needed.

I think I will try something like this on one side of my next tank.

I love it. In my old house I sat my 225 gallon reef tank on 4- 2 1/2" black steel pipes core drilled into the concrete foundation wall with all plumbing piped behind sheetrock. My kids would sit under and look up because it was bare bottom. It looked like it was floating there. I think that is really creative to suspend the rockscape.

I like this one only because the corals are beautiful. Regarding floating reefs in general, they are not my cup of tea.

I have done this but with less gap above the sand. This looks lovely and very arty but it’s kinda unnatural how it’s hanging there. I wanted my reef to look like it is growing out of the back wall. Im not sure how successful I’ve been but I like it and it’s only six months old.

I certainly think it’s unique looking, though maybe not something I would do instead of a natural scape (unless it was a planted Pandora tank, which would be awesome!)

I mean first it’s a beautiful tank, however I’m not really feeling the magical floating rock thing. I much prefer a more vertical rock shelf that has negative space areas that allow branching coral to grow in.

I think the floating reefs are really cool for a more artistic look vs. a natural reef look. As I have always done traditional scapes, I cant help be see all of the wasted space in there.

One question more about this particular photo. To me this picture almost seems staged. How are all of those corals not stinging each other? And how do you have Acros growing at the same level as Acans and scolys? If I put my Scoly up were the acans are, it would burst aflame.

I'm sure on a reef edge there is probably something like this sticking out, and being practical you will be able to keep the sand bed clean so it's a yes from me.
