Hello, fellow reefers!

Question for y'all today... Do any of you get algae in your fresh saltwater, or is it just me, and if so, what am I doing wrong??

I've been making my own SW for a while now, and I kept getting algae in my reserve jugs, so when I would do water changes, I'd find algae in the bottom of the jug I had just emptied into my tank (using the canister filter to suck the water out of the jugs).

Thought maybe it was the salt I was using (Reef Pro), so I switched to Tropic Marin Classic (no corals except a shroom). I mix it 20 gal at a time, using RODI in a 35 g Brute bin with 2 small water pumps for good mixing and flow.

I have tried leaving the SW sealed in jugs, sealed in the Brute bin, and now I'm keeping the pumps going for constant movement and the lid on (though not sealed, due to cords of pumps) to keep light out, but after a few days, I always get a ring of algae just above the water line (see pix below), which means it's probably in all the water I'm putting in my tank (and likely why there's so much dang algae in my tank!).

I've scrubbed out the Brute bin and the pumps multiple times with vinegar, and even ran the pumps in vinegar water, in case it was in there, to no avail.

My friends in this field don't seem to have that problem, and the LFSs keep it in a vat to sell to customers, so there has to be a way to do it! So I'm just wondering if this is a common problem, or if I'm doing something wrong, and how you guys and gals are doing it.

I would really appreciate some feedback! Thank you!

Not sure if that is algae or just a brown "crud" that a lot of salts leave. Or residue. My saltwater brute gets that. Esp. if I mix it up and it sits for a week or so. I just take a scrub brush to the brute when done. But not even all the time. I use Live aquaria salt. Which is way better than the IO I started with. Have a feeling it is something we have to live with.

Oh good, so it's not just me!
