Does this sound normal for a MP40

The "Emperor has no clothes" comes to mind. How dare you insult or question the mighty MPx pumps!

What percentage are you running it up to? if it's going from 0 to 100% then you will get that kind of noise.

it is loud at any speed in every mode. I tried on reefcrest but its still loud. I am in contact with ecotech they said it might be wet side is bad causing the dry to be loud.. I ordered the maintenance kit to try and fix up the wet side to see if it makes it quiet. the wet side sounds like its bouncing around marbles when it hits a certain speed and it will rattle on and off. the wet side will run ok then a few sec or a few min later it will sound like a rock tumbler.

Yes that sounds about right never had a mp20 but I have had a mp60 and its allot quieter than the mp40

hmmm if this is normal then if the kit fixes wet side or not its being sold. thats just way to loud for me. and I will say even while its running I actually liked the flow pattern my WP25 makes over the MP40.

well I will be selling it for $225. less then I paid and even less that I have the maintenance kit will be invested into the wet side. So hopefully that makes it sell quick

Yes, given what the WPXX pumps do I can not justify the price difference of the MPXX pumps. Especially when you consider the frequency that I hear people talk about noise issues and having to replace wet sides.

yea thats why i am pretty sure that even if the wet side kit fixes it totally I am gonna sell it cause I just like the flow the WP25 gives my tank better in else mode. hell the whole WP25 cost less then a wet side replacement of this pump. I was pretty excited to get the pump but the way the flow is i was a bit let down on it. it creates alot more undertow but it doesnt seem to create the flow I like the full length of the tank

Mine doesn't make a noise and is on 50%, I have two. Only time it makes a noise is the low hum when I crank it to 100 percent to pull everything up when I do a water change.

I'm running 2 mp40 it makes little noise when crank up to 100% like Acro mention above. did you check the glass thickness setting on the driver just a thought.

I cant hear the video I am at work and video dont convey how loud it is anyway because the more someone turns up their speakers the louder it would seem.

They are not a quiet pump to begin with, they are on the outside of the tank and also have to over come the thickness of the glass...

The bearings on them go after a while and need to be replaced... Just Google Mp40 bearings you will find lots of threads and videos on the subject and how to replace them. Shame for such a expensive pump Ecotech marine has not got a cheaper replacement and force you to buy a new dry side which is very expensive. Also a shame Ecotech marine has not resigned the pump to fix the problem with them.

Good news is the bearings are cheap and with propoer tools can be fixed on your own.. You also can srew them up forever if you make a mistake...

i would but the sticker on the pin spacer is gone so I have no idea what is the correct one. I tried all the different thicknesses on the spacer to see what works best but they are all loud and all rattle but the on that puts the magnet furthest away seems to make it run the best. I am using on a 40B
yea i just ordered the bearings for replacement but it does suck that a unit that cost this much needs so much repair

learned my lesson never buy a used vortech. They just seem to wear out parts to fast. they probably make them this way to cut down on selling used cause they start to go bad and need fixing alot

Wow guys really? To anyone who says that noise is normal for an mp40 has never seen a properly set up mp40. It sounds like yours is on short pulse. I also have mine on short pulse 100% and they are pretty quiet.

Jonreefer the only things that will make it have that noise is the pin spacer is not done properly and the wetside isn't aligned properly as well. If you go on ecotechs site they will have a printout of the pin spacer to help you get going. After you get the spacer properly done put the mp40 on 100% on green mode. Move the wetside around until the noise dies down. There should only be a very slight hum. If it still chatters then the wetside needs to be rebuilt.

Don't lose faith in these pumps. If the wetsides are cleaned and maintained they won't need rebuilt for many years. I am going on year 3 with mine and I have never rebuilt them. I give them a vinegar bath at least every 4 months, sometimes a little longer. If you have any other questions just ask.

save your money and buy the jebao wp. You bought yourself a problem pump. It is probably out of warranty and they unleashed it on you. As much as they cost I would call ecotech and see what they say. Dont tell them it was bought on the forum.
