I have some theories, but really can't be sure. Some of my clownfish NEVER wanted to live with anemone. Some darts to it within minutes of introduction. And some would host anything but anemone (clams, soft coral, LPS, etc). What are your experiences? How do captive raised clowns behave differently from wild ones?

Boy hot topics tonight.

To say that thousands of years of evolution have has been wiped from the genetic code in less than a century seems unlikely to me.

You'll get your best results if you pair the clown types with the anemone type compatible in nature, the natural host.

Do I think some clowns may need an example to encourage them you bet. I wish I knew the definitive answer, is it that some clowns just do not want to reside in anemone regardless of captive born and raised? Found within that clowns genetic code is there a tendency to not reside in an anemone because that clown will never be dominate, or......I could go on all day.

In the end it's been my experience that a clown will more readily reside in an anemone if shown how to by other clowns, but that is just my opinion.

Well I had a maroon clownfish wildcaught and when I put two anemones in the tank he hosted both it was really weird

My Maroon clown pair went to the anemone straight upon introduction and have never hosted any Euphilia, Clam... for 15 years. Wild caught Ocellaris pair also hosted anemones immediately when I got them and didn't host any Euphilia although they were in an euphilia in a friends tank for years. They are currently in a tank without an anemone nor Euphilias since a couple of years would be interesting to see if they'll head straight to an anemone when I move them back.
Platinum clowns female did take to the anemone after few months make still sleeps on the top of the water since a couple of years he makes a few attempts to approach the female but I'm not sure if they are a pair.

ive seen people go as far as putting their ipad against the tank with a video on loop of a clown and a nem to get the clown to accept a nem lol its hit or miss, ive seen clowns host everything from anemones to duncans to powerheads and overflows lol.

Every time I have paired a clown with a host naturally/normally found in nature, I have had success in less than 48 hours, typically less than 24. I've never owned a wild clown, all mine have been captive bred.

I'd be interested just of the people who respond or read this thread to know if anybody hasn't had success with a natural host.

And just to cut this one off at the knees, if you have a BTA and don't have a Maroon, Tomato or Clarkii, you're outside of the "natural" host for that Nem. Doesn't mean it can't or won't, just means it doesn't normally in nature so it's not a surprise it doesn't always in people's tanks.
