Does your LFS carry Blue Ringed Octopus?

Tbh, even if nothing ever happens to whoever buys it if anyone actually does, the store is making a conscious choice to sell a very deadly animal to a regular person. Just the fact that they sold it to someone considered not qualified to handle something so dangerous is something they could face charges on because they are knowingly putting someones life in danger by selling it to them.

Stopped by one of my LFS today and they had in a small blue ringed octopus (about 2 inches) and not bad at only $69. That said, I did not buy it but first time I’d ever seen one in person or even for sale, making me wonder if any of your LFS get one in?

*They did have warnings on the glass stating it was deadly and that a waiver must be signed when purchased.

Here’s the little guy:

Never seen one of those in person before! I would be a little terrified to care for one of those creatures

It should be illegal to sell. So the purchaser signs a waiver. What about the uninformed adult or a curious innocent child visiting that home?

One of the 7 deadliest with quick death- Liability tells me , dont even bring it into my store.

Exactly. Maybe there's no law specifically stating you can't throw bowling ball off highway overpasses in Idaho but everyone knows that you shouldn't do it. If you accidentally kill someone because you didn't see the car coming it's still your fault for putting someones life in danger.

Unfortunately people have a weird draw to the deadly. In almost all snake bites in the US the victims just happen to be intoxicated 15-25 year old men(well boys).

Moral of the story is don't get a deadly animal. Get something that looks like a deadly animal and lie to impress your friends. May I present my deadly Sea Snake!! ;)

Exactly...the store just wants to use it primarily to draw in customers...if they actually sell it they're really testing the water for a possible lawsuit and if they don't plan to sell it they better not keep it in a tiny holding tank like the other livestock and house it properly otherwise that's a little bit cruel...

Saw one last week my LFS. Kept a in those betta cups (just the bigger version of those cups). I’ve seen 3 or 4 there through out the years at that LFS. I assume it’s getting sold and not just for the shock value. I’ll look at it but never care for it because of the venomous reasons. I’ll ask next time I’m there why they sell them if I see it the next time. There was no written warning of it being venomous on the glass or cup or waiver or anything. I just think it’s such a liability to have one since you aren’t selling it for very much. Now thinking about it, they are smart animals and it it escapes it’s cup and get out onto the floor and I step on it, etc - it’ll be bad (of course very low risk of that…but never know).

I'd probably assume they die instead of get sold so quickly...

Stop it! You have ruined our Idaho bowling leagues by revealing how we reduce the influx of Californians. Local bumper stickers say "welcome to Idaho now go home"! Hahaha. Don't take it the wrong way I immigrated to Washington and Idaho via Kentucky to hide my California birth certificate! Hahaha.

No back to the informative law review! By the way Blue Rings are smart, beautiful, and deadly!

WOW that's crazy! I've seen one at a reefing show before but that's the extent of it!

Really sad. Octopuses are insanely intelligent. Fish are quite a bit lower on the intelligence scale. But an octopus is entirely another story… confining them to an aquarium where they’ll never get what they need to thrive (in any sense) is barbaric imo.

Yes it is. I want to try a cephalopod someday but only when I know I can give it the best care possible and hopefully a captive bred one. As for fish intelligence:

Relatively short lifespan, couple of years tops for the bluey. You’d barely get through the ugly phase before it carked it. Prefer to see these little fellas going about their business in the wild.

In the US at least it is usually only venemous snakes that are permitted/illegal. The stores do still carry some risk as I assume they would be sued if an employee or customer was injured or killed. It really is not a smart purchase for the store and if I owned one I would either not order deadly animals or demand a customer sign a liability waiver and pick it up immediately.

What scares me more are the things most people don’t know about. I could see a store selling pretty snails and having no idea they are cone snails for example.
Cone snails is something that can come in as a hitch hiker. I believe I had one early on
