So just checked my copper level in my two QT tanks...one was 3.4 and the other was 5! I'm using copper power so trying to keep it at 1.5 to 1.75... using 1ml of CP per gallon of water changed out. I didn't check the level yesterday since I worked a 12 hour shift, but the day before it was fine at 1.6 something range. The only thing different yesterday was that my husband removed the sponges from the HOB filters and rinsed them because he thought they looked dirty. Could that have caused such a big swing in the copper level?
Changed out a bunch of water and now have it down in the 1.3 something range. Fish all look ok and they even ate this morning! But I sure would like to know what happened...yikes!

Ok silly question. I'm assuming with the readings you provided, you are using Hanna checker?

How do you fill your cuvettes?

A friend of mine used the same syringe that he doses copper with to extract tank water and fill cuvette. There was enough residual copper in the syringe to give him a reading of 5.0ppm.

There should be nothing that would cause a fluctuation like you've described unless you are dosing copper up to that level, or something like I mentioned above.

This friend of yours was me.

My thoughts exactly.

Yes I do use a Hanna checker, and I guess that could have happened..I'll make sure I have dedicated syringes from now on. Hopefully that was it...thanks!
