Hi everyone.

I purchased 2 x anemone about 4 weeks ago.

The one on the left is flourishing in the DT. The one on the right has not been looking its best. When first put into the DT it decided to find its spot on the back of the tank under a rock. It was hard for me to observe and spot feed so I decided to move it next to the flourishing anemone. It's started there since, moving a couple of centimetres to find a more comfortable place away from the light and flow. As you can see the mouth of the anemone is not the best at the moment. It looks swollen.

I have been feeding it reef roids and frozen mysis shrimp. It had deflated and looked saggy a few times (regurgitating) but since feeding reef roids I don't think it's done that since.

I honestly think I bought a bad quality anemone, I'll be honest i did not give it a proper check of the mouth before purchase.

I have read about cipro, and have my 14g QT ready if need be. Cipro where i am is prescription only so I cannot get it readily from the shelf. I do have a friend that works in a pharmacy that can prescribe me cipro, although for human use. Do you think this is advisable?

I know the first question people will ask is the age of tank. It's 6 months in. Parameters are great. Seeing how great the other nem is, i really think i bought a bad quality nem.

Any other thoughts or advice i could do to make it feel and look better?

What kind of nem is the one on the right? The one on the left looks like a sebae, but I can't quite tell.

As far as I'm aware they're both BTA's.

I am not sure about the anemone but I was able to find cipro on chewy. Not sure if that helps but is best that I have. I lack just as much knowledge as you do with anemones

I don't think either of those are BTA's, the left one looks like a Condylactis and the right one looks like a Malu sebae.
Sadly, I have no experience with either of these anemones, so I cant give further help. But the one in question just looks like it's eating something, I wouldn't worry unless it starts gaping.
Good luck and God bless you!

Wow I guess its not a BTA! Interesting.
Well either way, the one on the right doesn't look healthy. Left is beautiful though!

What type lights do you have? They don’t look like BTA’s

It's a reef tank that came as a whole package. According to the website it's a 40W LED light.
I run it from about midday till about 8pm, about 8 hours per day.

Hmm. Well anemones generally require higher light intensities. Not sure exactly what light you have but may not be enough. Just hard to tell with limited info on light. Best of luck

This is the light I have. It is the model in the middle Mariglo 90:

I understand it is basic, but would it really cause an anemone to react like this with the mouth swollen etc?

Do you have any idea what your par levels are? And yes, if the zooxanthellae are being expelled due to low light, it will look like that. Personally I feel at least one of those is a sebae, and sebae are usually white with purple tips

Looks like two sebaes to me with the one on the right in poorer condition. One of the harder nems to keep from what I understand. 6 month old Tank not nearly established enough for anemones as difficult as these. I don't think its a bad quality anemone, but, and sorry if you take offense to this, a bad choice. You put anemones into a tank that was questionable as far as being established and weren't even sure of what you had bought. The one on the left looks a little too transparent too and maybe not too far away from looking like the other imo. Compare to this one with an off white less transparent sebae nem. Also a 40 watt led is grossly inadequate light for an anemone!

What about this picture? Does it look like a sebae now? I took the original picture in the morning.

Here's another picture of the odd one..

Try to target feed copepods with the pumps off. That’s pretty much the best way to nourish a struggling nem. I bought a dying Magnifica from Petco and I nursed it back to health with pods and good water quality.

Did you feed live copepods?

My shrimp are always cleaning that unwell nem. And NEVER touches the other one. Must speak volume in the little marine world inside that tank of mine. Maybe that nem is full of parasites!?

So does anyone still think my nem is sebae judging from my photos 2 posts up?
