How do you approach frags that have gone dormant and that haven’t “reactivated”? Do you continue to leave them where they are? Or do you attempt to move to maybe a more favorable spot condition wise?

here’s an example from my tank of a rainbow stag that just stalled out months ago and hasn’t begun encrusting or extended its polyps as much. The stag is at the top while the table underneath has grown relatively well.

Add blue lighting, add some lugols iodine to tank water, moderate light and water flow and verify salinity ( should be 1.025-1.026) and temp of 78 degrees and ph range. . . . 8.0 - 8.2

You can try snipping the tip to maybe spur growth. I've had some frags stay dormant for about a year, depends on the species too.

All params have been on including iodine.

on average though would you leave it, or move in a higher flow / light area?

I vote for leaving them and continuing to stock your tank accordingly. By the time you’re done, the previously dormant frags will have sprung to life, with a little care and luck.

Thanks everyone, I was thinking the same but have been wondering as it’s been in place there around 2 months.

I’ll let it be.

If the frag is movable take it out of water for 10sec and put it back the frag will slime and often it will stimulate the frag

I normally snip the tip or move them into higher light after many months of no growth. Which rainbow stag is this Hugo’s? I just finally got a piece of my red stag that I didn’t even know I gave a piece of to a friend. I was pumped, red stags are something you don’t see often.

It doesn’t look dormant though it’s got some color and growth on the bottom. Two months is not really long enough, you might get new growth soon as it looks ok. I think scoring it is a great idea, on the base or the top.

Thanks all!

it’s a Ray G’s rainbow stag from CC, very nice. I don’t know if it’s related to the Hugo’s stag. Brett at CC would be the guy to confirm. Here’s what it looked like with full polyp extension:

I’ll try scoring the edges of the encrusted base today.

Thank you, that’s a new one for me I haven’t heard of. I will have to keep an eye out for if they get anymore up on the site.
