Dosing a tank with minimal coral?

just in case, 8 dkh =. 2.8 meg/l. Any chance you read the wrong table when you read "close to 3" ?


I have a 29 gal. In a new tank with 3 soft coral, I agree that 10% weekly water changes is all you need to do right now. Test your new salt water and verify your mixing process , just to make sure you have reliable water going in your tank.

Testing the tank regularly is good, and I disagree to some extend about not needing to dose. A 10% water change will only change, well, 10% so, it's possible that NO3 an PO4 can build up and ALK/CA get depleted over time. Testing will confirm whether or not the water changes are sufficient for your tank down the road.

Also, occasional larger water changes can be an effective maintenance tool for a nano. look up the rip clean/sand bed rinse threads read them. Again, not for now, but understanding the biology of this approach could be helpful early one time corrections/remedies as opposed to stop gap additives that create longer term issues.

One last thing, do you have target number ranges?
I just try to stay in the ranges the test kit tells me. I’m going to get a better test kit. Is it ok to just stop dosing? I’ve been doing it for couple weeks and not sure if I should just stop or tapering off is better

Stop dosing. Do a 5 gallon water change with properly mixed salt every other day until you've replaced the total volume of your aquarium.

Make sure your water is mixed at temperature with a heater and powerhead.

I don't add salt to my water until it reaches 75-78 degrees. After that let it mix at least a couple of hours at the minimum.

After it's clear, test the sg (specific gravity). You want your salt when mixed with RODI to be 1.025 - 1.026 or around 35 pt depending on what you're using to measure.

If your sg is on point, your salt mix should have the appropriate amount of elements in their correct ratio.

I've also done full planted tanks as well.

Both these tanks were eBay lights, pumps and powerheads.

I've since upgraded my equipment and changed tanks.
 
Water changes are more than enough for your tank. Why people continue to dose and be told to dose when they have lightly stocked and new tanks is beyond me..... And on top of that. Have no clue what their parameters even are, hilarious!

Here's a reason maybe you didn't think of in your hilarity: Dosing is cheaper than water changes, if that is the reason for doing the water changes.
 
I started to dose to raise my alkalinity which was at like 3

3 meq/L, which is fine, or 3 dKH which is so low it sounds like just a test error.
 
The problem of using 2-part to raise Alk is that it will throw other things out of wack. You're better off getting your alk up with a large water change.

OK, I'll bite, what do you think it will throw off if you use a quality two part as directed?
 
I heard that gfo did that. I tested the alkalinity after using gfo and I saw that it crashed. Could be unrelated.

Unrelated and probably a test error. 3 dKH is unheard of low, and 3 meq/L is fine.

I was pretty sure none of this was as directed, since OP didn't have a full test kit.

If OP has low calcium and alkalinity ( which I'm not sure of since 3 meq or 3 dkh are widely different parameters ) strictly dosing 2-part with unbalanced elements already in the system will throw magnesium levels off further than they possibly already are.

"Used as directed" seems like a funny proposition considering the origins of this thread.

Just to be clear, I'm not dismissing 2-part, I've used Seachem Reef Fusion 1&2 in the past and currently dose kalk in my ATO.

I'm just saying that OP shouldn't be doing anything other than getting his base water parameters under control until anything else is changed, or if it even needs to be.

I started using a GFO to get my phosphates down and it caused my alkininity to crash. To solve that I started dosing a two part . I only have 3 soft corals and 4 SPS frags in a 29 gallon tank. Am I overdosing?
Why would you run GFO to reduce phosphates if you don't have a test kit for phosphates? How do you know they needed to be reduced?

And 0 phosphates is just as bad as high phosphates - your corals will starve at zero.

Ok. I will share the Red Sea mixed reef parameters. The specific numbers are not as important as knowing why we care about them and why Red Sea thinks enough to publish them. fwiw, I think their ALk number is high and can hard to maintain. That's ok. because I am going to recommend that you look at the other tank recommendations and start to think why they think different tanks should target different numbers (and why I think their mixed reef alk number is high).

The point here is that there are contradicting information that can confuse a beginner (and an old salt at times). but some commonality will start emerging. For example, we have probably messed you up with the advice not to chase numbers while demanding you tell us numbers.

In some cases, like Alk, stability is more important that the actual number provided you are in an acceptable range. I have a hard time maintaining alk at 11.5 dkh like Red Sea says I should. There are two good reasons for that. Higher Alk is more prone to precipitate (and form the white dots all over your pumps and hardware). Secondly, when ALK is high and there are sufficient nutrients in the water, coral growth should increase and thus consume the ALk (and CA and other good stuff) causing ALk to drop. See how this can get confusing. So my tank (and I cannot tell you why) likes to settle in the 8-9dkh range. So instead of chasing 11.5 dkh, I listen to my tank and it tells me it will be more table in the 8-9 dkh range. And so that is all I need to know (that and I think my NO3 and PO4 numbers are good for that range).

So look at the sps numbers. You would think with all that need to build coral skeletons, an sps tank would have high alk numbers. Nope. confused? You should be. If not, kudos.

So there appears to be some evidence that ALK, light and NO3 and PO4 levels are related. Seems that in these ULN - Ultra Low Nutrient - sps tanks, high Alk tends to lead to tip burning. I won't go into why (great threads in other sections on this) just to be aware of this before deviating from published numbers. Of course, to really confuse you, for every general consensus among groups of experienced successful hobbyist, there will be outliers with awesome sustainable tanks that will throw the consensus out the window.

See why we say don't chase number while demanding you tell us numbers? Stability is more important but numbers can give us clues as to why something isn't going as planned.

fwiw BRS recommends that new tanks (first year) target NO3 and PO4 a little lower since new tanks don't yet have a lot of microfauna, coraline, corals etc that help keep alage at Bay. Personally I like middle of the range. Trying to target very low NO3 and PO4 can be difficult and leave you will no room for error. Remember the post that said zeros can be just and bad and even worse that hight nutrients.


Ok, since this thread started with dosing ALk, and I spent a lot of time on Alk, I'll circle back on ALk. It's important to test your salt water mix before adding it to your tank since it's not all uncommon for salt mixes not to mix as predicted and the recipes for these mixes is usually for 1.022 SG and not 1.025/6 SG (35ppt). New salt water should be as close as possible to your target range and your tank. So don't copy me with the 8/9dkh Alk. When you mix your salt that will be a good indication of what parameters you will be able to maintain.

When you are ready to to do a water change, test your tank. That will tell you how much your tank consumed in between the water changes and whether or not you will need to dose anything.


One last thing, and great advice I recently got from Randy who schooled me on chloramines on something I blindly accepted from a reliable vendor, is do not take anything as gospel from a vendor. Even if their intentions may be sound, they are prone to draw conclusions that lead to product sales (and sometimes they are just outright snake oil lies)




PS. stop dosing until you can tell for sure by accurate testing that you need to dose anything,. A new tank with 3 softies shouldn't be consuming alk beyond the normal testing error range to warrant dosing. Normal testing error? test back to back to see how far apart your readings are. And don't stress, to this day I can't tell you for sure within .5 dkh when the color changed. I rely that I am consistently reading it the wrong way.

I got a test kit finally. My alkalinity is at 10. I did three water changes and stopped the dosing
