@Randy Holmes-Farley

And others...

I dose strontium, potassium chloride, calcium chloride and magnesium chloride allllll in solid forms of flakes, pellets, powder.

Does a cotton filter sock WORK AGAINST me by filtering that stuff out?

Throwing an expensive sock in the washer caked with the dosing ingredients listed above?

The flakes, pellets, and powder eventually dissolve in your water right? I believe once they're dissolved you're ok. Unless your dosing your elements and immediately changing your filter sock out

@Crabs Mcjones

My tank is a 180g with pretty powerful powerhead on both opposing walls colliding water straight at each other.

My dosing regiment is to turn OFF the main recirculating pump from the sump but have the PHs still swirling water....I dose directly into the DT bc the PH quickly dissolve whatever I dump directly over top of it.

I actually let the dosing swirl around for 1-2 hrs before the recirculating main pump comes back on.

So the filter socks arent "in play" while the recirculating pump in on.

I'm confused, if you turn off the return pump and what you dose is dissolved before you turn on the return pump then no, the socks wont filter it out. If your dumping the flake in pellets directly in the sock and changing them out before the product dissolves then that could be a problem?

Then I would think you're fine. Once they're dissolved the socks shouldn't be able to filter them out.

You are brave to dose this way. I would dissolve the powder in tank water outside of the main DT, and then pour it into my sump to insure that no powder salts hit my corals. I've had small pieces of salt creep get dislodged and land on corals and the results are not pretty.

As far as dissolution goes, I would not expect these salts to form crystals on the filter socks unless they were supersaturated. If the flakes did get into the sock, I would expect the salt-flake to dissolve into the water if the tank water is not saturated already.

Let me clarify.... I dissolve all flakes, powders, pellets into a liquid firm using RODI ..... then dump that mix into the DT powerheads

I have NO IDEA what's swirling around in the DT.... completely dissolved compounds? Compounds that are micro granulars?

My FEAR is if the compounds are still granular that it will just collect in the filter sock, accomplishing very little .

Exactly like me taking expensive multivitamins only to urinate 95% of it into the toilet..... :(

Why do you turn off your circulation pump? Then you are just creating a difference between your DT and your sump that has to equalize once you start circulating again

How would they be granular if you just stated that you dissolve in RODI before dosing in the display? I would've stated that in your original post. So the purpose of this post is to find out if filter socks will filter out what your dosing? I'd say no. If that was the case then no one would use them.

I wouldn't dose into the DT. I dose directly into my filter socks. If the socks are not clogged it allows everything to dissolve slowly. If your socks are clogged then if its powder then it will just get clogged and go to waste
