Dosing Bakers Yeast!?

Hey all, I have been battling diatoms for quite some time now. My LFS told me to use bakers yeast. 1/4 teaspoon for 400 gals. I have a 100 gal tank so I should dose 1/16 of a teaspoon every 3-4 days? Should I just add the yeast in the water or should I dissolve it beforehand? @Randy Holmes-Farley do you know how bakers yeast combat diatoms?

I have a 35 gallon and used a pinch of yeast twice. No more diatoms. I just dropped it in the top and it did the rest.

I don't see any strong reason to think this will work to deter diatoms. Removing silicate sources is my general recommendation.

Some folks think yeast helps, but there's no clear mechanism, so no clear understanding if it works sometimes or it is just coincidence.

here's a lengthy discussion tracking someone's experience with it.

"The verdict, at least for me was it worked. It wasnt overnight and didn't completely eradicate them in total, but did drive their numbers down significantly. The rest was time and good husbandry. I would do it again if needed."
