Is there a linit on how much the ppm of magnesium can change before causing adverse affects to the coral? When I need to increase it I increase the ppm by 18.3 per day until the value is good(usually 1300)

The BRS calculator states "If necessary, spread the dose out to avoid raising magnesium levels more than 100 ppm per day. Test accordingly." for their magnesium solution of magnesium chloride and magnesium sulfate, but it doesn't say why. I'm sure @Randy Holmes-Farley could answer the "why" part.

Had I known this before I would have spent less days dosing. Thanks

The "why part" really has little to do with magnesium rising and more to do with potential impurities that might be in the magnesium (ammonia, metals, etc.). Adding potentially toxic impurities more slowly will allow the system to (at least partly) detoxify them before they reach a problematic concentration. It's just insurance since magnesium never needs to be added fast.

Could one add the magnesium to ato water? Not every day, but BRS suggest adding 20oz mag when you use a gallon of 2 part. Could that be added to my ATO reserve of 3g? The ato would be refilled many times before adding more mag.

I use kents magnesium for dosing. Are there any impurities I should watch out for?

Yes, spreading it out is a fine plan, this way or other ways. :)

M-Tech used to have an impurity in it that killed off bryopsis at high mag. levels but I heard they changed the formula and it does not work for bryopsis anymore.

Thanks Randy! That will be an easy way to do it!

Yes but do not add anything else to it.

Ok, I will continue to dose in small amounts but at least I know that th doesages dont need to be as small

I use continuum reef basis magnesium. I love the product and have raised levels more than what you are trying to do at once. Atleast double what you are trying if not a bit more at times. Just be careful. I mix in a pot using sump water and a wisk to dissolve it and then add it slowly by the return pump. Just be careful of the heat generated when adding the water. It gets real HOT!

Why do you love the product?

According to Kent the original Tech-M formula is now used in his new Continuum line.

And FYI it worked for some but not others. I was one it did not work for.

Jason,
Good to know! :)

I guess we have that Fluconazole treatment now but (lol) I'd rather do the old M-Tech treatment.

Have you updated your Salt Mix parameter thread with anything new?

Thank You, Freddie

I had a doser fail on and dumped a whole jug of mag solution in my tank. I had no noticeable ill effects to the tank. It's read over 1500 ppm for a couple months now with zero dosing. Obviously I wouldn't recommend it, but seems like our livestock can handle mag swings pretty well, at least in my case.
