dosing water changes DO WE NEED TO

it is near impossible to try and keep a healthy reef tank with ANY stoney corals whatsoever without maintaining levels. Basically to short answer your question NO you cannot just dabble with sps or lps without keeping your levels up, now you can do that by Either dosing or water changes (depending on your salt) He uses red sea which is PACKED with trace elements. so if you wanna be technical YES he still very much so doses, just not with pure elements but with his quality salt mix

This thread is going nowhere. Op is asking two questions and won't acknowledge that they are related. You either do water changes, dose, or both, or you tank chemistry will go to hell and so will your inhabitants. There is no argument or conversation needed. You choose to replenish your elements by changing water. Some people choose to do it with dosing. Everyone is saying the same thing.

It doesn't matter how you keep your chemistry in balance as long as you keep it in balance. Are you trolling us? I'm done.

Your too wrapped in being right. They arnt the same. I acknowledged you either do one or the other. I do water changes. But people are saying you still have to dose which i was replying to. Not your reply. Also i asked if anyone has gone without doing both and been okay which a couple people stated they have. Im only curious. Either way i believe in doing water changes. If you dont like the thread please dont reply i dont need your opinion as youve never not done one or the other. Thanks !

thanks for the reply i understand that very well. Some people just believe u cant keep any reef at all without either. Which i agree with. Ive run into people who disagree tho which is why i have asked for people who claim they dont to give their opinion. Im not looking to not do whater changes. Cuz im pretty religious with them. Im curious as why others who claim they dont. Dont have to

your welcome, you can figure out the exact needs of your tank and have special inhabitants (detrivores) and equipment (algae scrubber) to make the things you do minimal to the tank, as long as your params are in line anything is possible, If you figure out a way to do it with little dosing and minimal water changes we would all love to see the new thread and who knows maybe youll figure something out that changes the industry. but you may lose some life in your tank along the way.

Im basically just trying to see if others are pioneering something thst were not aware of who knows !? With all the awesome stuff available maybe someones got a secret

basically we got to remember that the ocean and reefs and coral are still very largely misunderstood and there are things we know, and things that are strictly theorized. It is very much so the final frontier and we have only just scratched the surface. This isnt an exact science (at least not yet, if ever), and all we can do is (try to) replicate what we know about the ocean in our tanks to make all happy. and this is what we know. ocean has 420 ppm calcium, 7dkh alk, salt level around 1.025-.027 ph is 8.0-8.3 mag (important in calcium staying suspended in water instead of precip) stays at a whopping 1280 ppm phosphate 0.005 ppm nitrate, nitrite and ammonia less than 0.1 ppm, as long as you can stay close to that (no matter how you do it) then everything will prosper, anything else and they may just be being "kept alive" and not growing at all.

ive actually herd of people living near the ocean and pumping water directly from the lagoon straight to their tanks and out the other side. Now that would probably be Ideal but most of us arent that lucky (hence why we probably wanna keep the ocean inside our houses)

Holy cow. Haha that would be awesome and probably the only way u could go without water changes and dosing. See something like that would be what i was hoping to here in this thread. Someone whos gone outside the box to get optimal level without chems
