I am trying to learn about dosing and understand it but just not gettting it. Help!

You first must understand your tanks needs. So if you have current parameters post them along with your tank inhabitants and other system details and we can help give you a bit of insight into your specific dosing needs should you have any.

Dosing is just supplementing what your tank isn’t getting enough of to function at its best. All dosing depends on your individual tank size/inhabitants/nutrient demands etc. Whatever you want to dose- you figure out if there’s a need for it first, track your tanks usage/uptake of whatever you plan to dose, and the figure out the best supplement and way to get it in to the tank.

For example, if you are trying to grow corals but not noticing much color or growth etc. you may want to see if your Alk and calcium and magnesium and phosphates are stable and available. Test over a 10 day period to see how fast your tank is using these nutrients and then if you find you need to dose, you take the next step. Some tanks can maintain just on water changes alone.
