Downsides to Copepods?

I am thinking about getting some copepods to seed my tank but it got me thinking, are there any downsides to having copepods in the tank? I see a lot of benefits being stated, just curious if there are any negative side effects with having them in there.

I agree with the above comment, there’s no downsides to them! They’re an excellent food source, easy to sustain, and everything loves to eat them. Coral helps as a cover for them and the coral loves to eat them sometimes.

You’ll have copepods whether you want them or not.

Copepods eats diatoms, detritus, and uneaten food. Many fish eat them in turn, and some fish (mandarin, pipefish) cannot survive without them!

The only way to not have copepods is if you start a tank with 100% dry rocks and sand. Dip every single coral that ever enters the tank very well, never add any live rocks (too porous, copepods may survive the dip), and quarantine your fish prior - copepods may enter with your fish in the shipping bag.

My little 20 gallon coral QT has tons of them and I never added them purposely.

Well that really helps! Thank you all for your insight! Time for a follow on question, where is the best place to source the copepods? I have seen a lot of excellent reviews for algaebarn but have also seen other "live" pods for sale for cheaper else where.

Are used the Poseidon reef system and breed my own weekly Along with my own phytoplankton it’s amazing

Yep! The pods will love it and constantly multiply. The fish when they go back in will love it too.

Sure is Especially good to help them re-populate

But again they were only multiply of the conditions are right which means you need phytoplankton or at least some kind of Detrias or something for them to eat
