I know most people want to go big but Im wanting to downsize. Ive had larger tanks and earlier this year when I wanted to get back in the hobby I was looking for a 30-40 gallon but stumbled across a 60 cube for a good deal. Fast forward a couple months Im not happy with it. I feel the cube is limiting, the top half seems to be a waste of space and theres not a lot of sand room. Theres no room for a decent sump, can just fit my skimmer, heater and pump. Id like to downsize to my original plans but of course I want to make sure my current inhabitants (ones that came with the tank and ones Ive gotten) will still be happy.

What would be the smallest tank I should be good with?

Size doesn't matter. Hiding places, nutrient export does.

You probably already know this but a 40 breeder has a bigger footprint than the 60 cube. So, in terms of territories I would think that whoever you have in your cube would be ok in the 40?

Yeah thats more what I was looking at or a lagoon style but there would be less water volume and swim space. Just wanted opinions if that would be fine for my current stocking
