That part about Refresh being harmful to snails and shrimp gives me reason for pause as well. I did 1 round of Refresh/Waste Away, but still get some cyano popping up. I attribute it to my barely detectable nitrate. I dose ESV Calcium Nitrate daily, but only enough to keep the cyano (mostly) at bay. I also use his Color Up Your Corals recipe, which seems to help with coral health.I dose waste away and eco balance. Refresh states it's harmful to snails and shrimp. I was having recurring cyano issues in my tank that I couldn't solve over months of trying all the various solutions. I eventually gave in and used chemi clean. It worked temporarily, but as many people state the cyano will eventually come back due to not solving the root of the problem. After doing chemi clean twice and getting very frustrated I heard a podcast with Dr. Tim on the reef news network and the way he explained the varieties of bacterial communities that should live in our tanks and all fill their respective niches and outcompete nuisance algae and bacterias it made a lot of sense and I thought I'd give it a shot. Dr Tim's cyano recipe includes refresh which I didn't want to use so I decided on eco balance in order to maximize the varieties of beneficial bacteria strains in the tank. I dosed cautiously, lower doses than recommended, and alternate between eco balance and waste away about once a week or once every two weeks. After a couple weeks of dosing the cyano was gone and has never come back. I still get film algae and other normal algaes, so this is not a cure all and doesn't replace good practices and clean up crew. But it seemed to help and I still use it.

Maybe one day they will share their bacteria with the world ...![]()
Ya, I know. In the past I would order products to a US address in Niagara Falls NY and pick it up and drive it back, but the pandemic has kept the border closed for well over a year. It is back open now, but I am not sure if there are still more hurdles than in the past, so I am holding off going that route for now.if you really want it, there is a way !

So far with my shrimp and snails they seem perfectly happy even with the refresh in the tank!!!That part about Refresh being harmful to snails and shrimp gives me reason for pause as well. I am going to try Fauna Marin's Red-X to see if it helps to shift the bacterial balance away from cyano as it claims to. After the treatment I will use their suggested ReBiotic supplement.
Being just a frag tank, the cyano is not a big problem, but it would be nice to not have that distraction when doing nutrient management.
