So there's a rock that a bunch of freshwater aquarist use for rock scapes and it's more edgy and but I was wondering if I can put them in a reef tank or should I just do average dry rock

Both are dry rocks

Dragon stone is extremely expensive I thought. It has a lot of color which sometimes means minerals one wouldn't want in a salt water tank. I would go live rock or dry rock.

Ok I'm talking about okho dragon stone there's one vendor selling for about 15 dollars I'm just wondering how reef safe like if I could have some lps and soft corals on it or should I just stick with dry rock

This is the question that I need answered as well. I have seen a video on youtube Which seemed "reputable" that said dragon stone will not reach minerals into your tank.
But, I joined this forum to get a more definitive answer. It comes with a lot of dirt in the cavities of the the rock and definitely needs cleaning.
I was also thinking I should boil it as well, but it's fairly fragile and I'm worried about it falling apart during boiling. Looking for an experienced reefer to lend some info.
Thanks

I belive you need to look at sthe solubility of the minerals In the rock. Obviously most granite will or should not leach whereas sandstone and lime stone will.

Most reefers opt to not use some rocks because they are not geologists. I.e. Nowadays most will say not to use play sand because it contains silica. Silica is not very solubile. And play sand used to be the the standard in reef aquariums.

The problem with a lot of those freshwater rocks are that they are not very porous....just very dense, heavy rock. I have used Dragon Stone in my planted tanks but I wouldn't try in in a saltwater tank without testing first.

Well, I guess this will be a test. I'm setting up a 32" Tall square(20"x20") 40g tank with 20lbs. Dragon stone and 25lbs. live rock, live sand, 65g skimmer,Eheim 600 canister w/extras (Seachem Matrix, Eheim bioballs, Eheim biomech and Seachem Matrix carbon)Kessil A360w.
I'll let this cycle for 6 weeks, test everything and post the results.
I figure if it's bad, I'm not out to much. If it's good, I'll continue and post pics. See you in a couple of months.
Tips and input will be considered.
Thx, Jer

Hi- how is your tank going? I am asking because I'm also tempted to use it as a base for sponges and macroalgae.

I'm using (dead) Dragon Stone in my 5 gallon Fluval Evo: 10lbs rock. 5lbs of live sand.
3 week old tank and everything seems to be doing fine. GSP is out proud and Xenia is doing its thing. Peppermint shrimp visibly is good as well as my 1 hermit, 2 nassarius snails and 1 Astrea.

I'm a low maintenance hobbiest. I haven't done any water changes yet. Don't do testing besides having an ammonia card in there (always yellow [good]).
