Is there any reason that I could not use a 1" drain and a 1" return?

I have everything I need to do this...Just looking to save some cash since I have the bulkheads and all the pvc...this will be for a 40b with mag 18 return....if you are wondering about the big pump I will be using it to feed all my reactors and tee it off for the fuge.

dont see why not. although it seems like allot of plumbing and valves
would it be more cost effective to use a few smaller pumps?

Thats really not a good idea, for one you can pump more water than can drain and even if you do get it tuned right, then what if a snail or something slows the drain. I would recommend two drains if you choose to go with one inch.

I think I didn't explain right....I will be using the beanimal overflow for the drain....I was just wondering if it mattered that the return would be the same size 1"...usually they are 1" drain 3/4" return...just checking to see if there would be any issues if they were the same size.

There is not a problem with having a 1" return. You may have to use a reducer inside the tank in you are going to use loc line. I think it is mostly availible in 1/2" and 3/4".

No loc line....I have been thinking further and I may use the mag 18 for a closed loop and run a manifold around the top for flow.....I just really hate powerheads in a tank especially a small one like a 40b.....I would then use a mag 7 for the return.....Still not 100% sure on anything at this point....lol

Thanks for all the input....I was under the impression that there was a specific reason why the drain and returns were 2 different sizes....glad to know that it is not a must.
