Drain noise

Hey fellow reefers. The noise from my frag tank drain is driving me bananas. Attached is a picture of it

Should I raise the height to where the inlet is midway, meaning half in/out of the water line to decrease the noise or just do something completely different.

What type of overflow? If that's a standpipe, I'd put a durso type top on it. Basically one more elbow facing down, with a small hole drilled in the top.

It is an AIO frag tank from Advanced Acrylics (I drilled it to add a sump). I think I will make that change today. I have dursos on my DT and they are super quiet, so I guess I just need to do the same for the frag tank. Was being a little lazy when I plumbed it. Guess there is no room for being lazy

I go for this design....a tee, street elbow, an end cap and a little bit of pipe. That arrow is pointing out the hole in the endcap. And you can get away with no glue....just friction fit everything.

Happy you have a solution.

I have 2 dursos. One drain is super load and lots of flow into sump, so much so it makes a ton of noise and tons of bubbles from the force of flow, the one further from the sump, has barely any drain flow into sump. Hardly moves the water the drain is so slow and gentle. I've tried raising and lowering each but can't figure how to get less on one side and more on the other

I have had this same experience because I have dual overflows as well. The one with a shorter distance was super loud and had massive fast flow. The other drain had twice as long piping, and was much slower. No matter what I did I couldn’t control it.

Then I had an epiphany, I changed my plumbing to include dual return dc return pumps. With each overflow plumbed separate, I could control my flow now. So on the long and quiet one I turn it up more just to the point of loud then slightly back it off. The fast one I turn the flow of the pump down a lot, but still enough to flow. This so far is the only thing I have found to decrease my water noise. I have also raised my overflow intake pipes as high as possible to limit the amount of water falling. In addition, (which kinda is a pain but helps a lot) I found two piece of foam. They were cut to fit the perfectly in length and are about 2 inches by 2 inches roughly. They go down into the over flow water about a half inch, and are about 3/4 inch from the piping etc.

These also help make my tank even quieter, however you need to becareful and wash them the same time you do filter socks which for me is once a week. When I take them out it’s not a huge difference specially with things going on. But at night there is huge difference in the noise level with them in. Do not put these in and just forget about them, because it can eventually add pollution to your tank. This is why I wash them weekly every week. So far in the 7 months my tank has been up and running, I have had zero issues.

Thanks Sarah. I can't add another pump as there is no room in the sump but I increased the pump to 60%. Its plumbing is closer to the overflow that is less. It might have helped. Will check and increase again. I did raise the noisy overflow and don't want to go any higher as I'm making a cover for the tank. Not sure I can envsion your foam things. Maybe a pic? My overflow pipes go into the water a couple inches. I'll try to take a pic of it
