Drain Plumbing DT-Sump question.

I initially ran filter socks in my Sump for roughly nine months then I got interested in a blue Mandarin which required copepods so I removed my filter sock.

How do I stop this???



My Sump is full of bubbles!!!!!



I have a hob overflow that goes into a 1 and 1/2 inch bulkhead then converts down to 3/4 inch pipe for roughly 14 in then there is a 90-degree elbow and then 6in 3/4in pipe then another 90 degree elbow.
From the last 90 degree elbow there is a 1-inch flexible hose attached that runs roughly six inches straight down into the sump where roughly 3 in of the flexible hose is underwater but I'm always hearing bubble noises and like I said earlier my Sump is full of Bubbles and slowly gets into my DT

Before I took the filter sock off my Cheato was happily tumbling and turning now with the sock off roughly a half to 1in of the Cheato is above water just sitting there so I manually flip it every night.

I have now forgotten what it is called but I have this homemade Contraption in my hob overflow that causes the water to stay at a consistent level and you don't get the tub drain slurping sound.


What Plumbing changes do I need to do in order to stop all of these bubbles and bubbling noises??

I am very hard of hearing so little noises I don't even hear. But when I hear bubbling noises loud and clear then it has to be pretty darn loud to someone with normal hearing.

So there weren’t any bubbling sounds with the filter sock? And the chaeto not tumbling sounds like a flow problem in the sump. Let’s ask #reefsquad for some help.

The chaeto isn't tumbling and floating to the top from all the micro bubbles making it buoyant. The filter sock was likely taming the bubbles before they could escape out into the sump. Do you have a gate valve or anything on your plumbing or is it strictly gravity fed? Is it a single drain or dual drain? You could try butting a sponge on the bottom, pods should be able to navigate their way through a sponge, and it may help tame some of your bubbles.

Do not have any valves on the drain section. Just totally gravity-fed. However I do have a ball valve that I was going to install that way I could turn the flow off when I'm needing to change the filter sock but never installed it since I removed the filter sock.

The only reason why I had the flexible pipe to flexible pipe was so I can pull it out of the filter sock. Since I am no longer using a filter sock would I be able to just go to a three-quarter inch PVC and reduce the bubbles? Or reduce the size of the PVC going into the sump?

Do not have any valves on the drain section. Just totally gravity-fed. However I do have a ball valve that I was going to install that way I could turn the flow off when I'm needing to change the filter sock but never installed it since I removed the filter sock.

The only reason why I had the flexible pipe to flexible pipe was so I can pull it out of the filter sock. Since I am no longer using a filter sock would I be able to just go to a three-quarter inch PVC and reduce the bubbles? Or reduce the size of the PVC going into the sump?

Reducing the pipe size and creating a little back pressure will help, but not eliminate. Best way to eliminate the bubbles is to create a siphon using a gate or ball valve that way the drain cannot gulp any air. This is not without its hazards, restricting the flow to create a siphon can cause issues if it ever becomes clogged. Smaller space = easier to clog Valves are typically used on herbie style drains or bean animal style drains.
How is the drain setup on the top? can you share a picture? Do you have it set up durso style or is it simply an open pipe down to the sump?

This is the DIY contraption that I made so I didn't have the bathtub drain slurping sound and water stayed somewhat consistent in the Overflow...



I just have a single drain and this contraption fits into the bulkhead it might be a durso I'm not sure I found the diy instructions online.

I have to have this pump type thing to keep a siphon. Periodically a pineapple Sponge will make its way into it and it will stop the circulation and my DT will overflow.



But in an attempt to keep the D T from overflowing I have the water level in the return section of the sump as low as possible.




I am probably getting my hopes up, but if I install a valve on the drain part and restrict the flow will I not need to rely on this circulation pump as much?

Put the filter sock back on. I'm considering getting a mandarin just because I have so many pods that they are a visible annoyance all over my glass and rock. Currently run socks 24/7.
