So basically, the tank is 55 gallons (4ft), with a sticker on the bottom that says "all panels tempered. DO NOT DRILL." So there go my dreams of running a proper overflow. It was a spare tank I had, so I didn't get the option to research beforehand. I also had a basic HOB overflow box that has a 1in bulkhead attached to it, so I got 1in PVC to do the drain and the return line plumbing (Doing a PVC overflow- is there another way to do it? because it looks *****). Then I saw a Tidal Gardens video talking about his plumbing annoyances and one of them included people running the same size plumbing for both lines.

The reasoning went over my head, so if someone could tell me if I have to scrap the return (and/or drain) for a different size, and if so, what they recommend that size should be, that would be a-w-e-s-o-m-e, and I'd appreciate you for the rest of my life.

I run the same size return plumbing and overflow plumbing. You cant see either while the tank is running except the over the top return.
Not sure why it would make a difference. I have had no problems.
My only suggestion is to get a HOB overflow that uses 2 drains. With a main and emergency you can quiet it and have some redundancy.
