Dream fish (sohal tang)

At least a 250g

Yes. They grow to 16" in the wild. Liveaquaria has them listed as a 250g minimum so even that is probably small.

This one is in the 14" range, and constantly pestering the 2' unicorn you can also see. Tank is a couple thousand gallons, I believe.

In the nature the defend a habitat of about 100 feet from the center.
I have heard of hotels banning their guests from bathing in the Red Sea because Sohal tangs were attacking and made wounds on their legs.

I dont believe this fish should go in any tank less than 1000 gallons. unlike many fish this one will get to 12"+ in captivity no problem. Besides the fact it probably eats and poops like a small cat

I had one in an 8ft 350 gallon and it was getting so nasty it would chomp up euphillia and just spit it out When I was watching it like to say screw you I’m ticked off LOL so I built a 560 gallon 10 foot tank and it was happy in it for a little while but it was the most aggressive fish I’ve ever encountered. And eventually turned on its tank mates. I won’t ever get another one. And I wouldn’t suggest anybody else does unless you have , like has been mentioned an extremely large tank

I'd love a sohal too but based on their size and swimming 6x body length is a minimum for length and I prefer at least 2x for width. So you're looking at a 8' x 3' tank at least 2' deep if not 30". That's a little over 350 gallons or if you go with the extra depth 450 gallons.

Even then you'd want minimal rock work so they could at least do laps. 1,000 is probably the minimum if you want it to have a more traditional rock scape.

My dream fish is a baby sohal tang and I want to build a tank in the distant future to fit this fish what do you all suggest for the size?
I'd say 300 gallons, minimum. 500 would be more acceptable. And it may well eventually end up killing all the other fish in your aquarium- these fish can be very nasty. They are known to attack other surgeonfish and large triggers in the ocean. It is a beautiful fish, though. The clown tang is somewhat close in appearance, and though it is fairly high up on the acanthurid aggression pyramid, it is a bit more manageable in a community tank. For a clown you're looking at 180 gallons at least- 250 would be a better fit.
