Is it possible to drill a tank while it is still set up (water level would be lowered) or does it have to be taken down for drilling? I really want to add a sump but the HoB overflows seem like such a risk, my floor of my apt has carpet so flooding would be a major disaster. Thoughts?

I have wondered this as well. My big issue is the glass residue getting into the tank, possibly be able to block this off. My biggest fear is the tank cracking and ruining the tank itself. Otherwise I think it can be done.

I think the biggest problem would be getting the drill to sit flush without applying too much pressure and cracking the glass

better off doing it fail-safe by migrating everything to another and then back. Or take this as an opportunity excuse to upgrade hahaha

I generally start off drilling at a angle. This gives a spot for it to "bite" into the glass. Then I slowly sit it flat. It helps it from walking around.

Go slow and let the drill do the work without a huge amount of pressure from you.

I think the hardest part would be containing the mess, I have drilled a couple tanks and its really messy. Plus I would worry too much about cracking the tank.

Yea, I think I will just use a HoB overflow
