I had another thread going that evolved into the drilling of an Aqueon tank, and I thought that this was great info to pass along.

The question was if the side panels of Aqueon tanks were tempered or not. People had varying experiences, so I reached out to Aqueon, and this was their response:

So basically, check the actual tank you're thinking about purchasing if you intend to drill it. There are a number of tutorials on how to check to see if glass is tempered or not.
Happy Reefing!

So they'll use any glass available, no matter how it's manufactured just to maintain the assembly line?
I would think that would be one of the main criteria for the assembly of their aquariums, based on design of manufacture.

I don’t think they’d use whatever is available. I think they’ll use whatever they can get from their suppliers. So the same tempered or annealed glass that they’d normally use.
Design wise, I’m assuming they are designed for annealed glass, so anything made with tempered should be just as stable, if not stronger.
Again, I’m just assuming these things based on good business practices.

Exactly what they told me a few years ago when I called and asked.

just drilled one of their 40 breeders...nothing was tempered including the bottom...checked with this laptop screen and the wifes clip-on polarized sunglasses...wasnt sure i was doing it right cause i saw no pattern even on the bottom so i double checked against a side window of my car to see what i was looking for

i read that too but i figured it would be safest to check it myself as i dont need anymore 80's freshwater aquarium gravel
